Hey guys,

First time poster long time reader, i feel i bit rude asking straight off the bat but im sure there'd be some helpful people here. Anyways I'm currently stuck in a situation and deciding what to do. I previously was in the market for a dc2r but insurance is a bit steep so I've considered a couple of options, either to work a EG or an EK. I've chosen the EK since its fairly newer and more up-to-date and just a bit heavier than the EGs.

Okay firstly I have to two options with the EK project:
1. Buy a EK4 VtiR and work the little B16A with I/E/H, powerfc, cams, cam gears, coilovers, swaybars, ctr 5 lug brake conversion and source out a ctr gbox or
2. Buy a EK CXi and do a full JDM B18C7 transplant, powerfc, 5 lug brake conversion, coilovers, swaybars, intake and other mods will depend on remaining money.

I'd be doing cosmetics last, eg. paint, ctr kit, etc. If i feel the need to do.

Does anyone know the major/minor differences between the VtiR and CXi models - mechanically, interior/exterior & options

Which one would you think would be more bang for buck? It's hard trying to find rough figures for both but could anyone give me a rough cost? I've asked a couple of my Honda friends but all have given me different responses. The major work like transplant would be done by a workshop, i have no idea where to start and even if i did i wouldn't have peace of mind knowing i did it myself and knowing something could go wrong any second!

Forgot to mention this car would be used as a daily/track car with the occasional spirited drive. When it hits the track it will have a oil cooler fitted and possibily a larger radiator.

Duration of completion: 6 - 12 months

Thanks a lot guys!

Buy a JDM DC2R front cut. That will cost you around $6500 landed. That way you can use your DC2R radiator which is a double bay radiator which mean you will need to take your ac out. If you get a 98spec you will get 5 stud front brakes and its only a matter of finding rear brakes. If you want to do it right buy a new clutch, final drive and lsd ( the stock one will do but you are better off getting something like a cusco lsd, they sort of have the feel of your fwd having a lock diff. People that have used them will understand what im saying those who havent wouldnt have a clue ).

My opinion is the AUD b16a is a girls engine and pointless to modify.

Hey dude,

Question whats your budget on the build, How much did u get quoted for insurance for a dc2R, got to break to you dude when you starting to put a b18c engine in a ek you will be looking into paying $$$ for insurance roughly around $1000-1300 depending on what insurance company u going and what you putting into the policy and your age.

I did the same thing couldnt afford the insurance for a dc2R when it first came out but loved the ek shape so ended up getting a new ek1 2000 model and eventually i know a b18cR engine will go in. Its not a cheap process going from a cxi.

Difference between a cxi and vtiR
vtir = ek4 96-98 roughly preface lift came stock b16a vtec ( I'm sure you can do a search for more info)
cxi = 96-98, d16y single cam non vtec, preface lift, rear drum brakes
gli = 97-98 d16y single cam non vtec, preface lift, late model came rear disc brakes and all power option
all power option, front and rear disc brakes
cxi = late 98-2000, facelift, d16y single cam non vtec, rear drum brakes

but let me know whats ur budget is

And don't forget the different trim on the vti-r and other models.. the vtir has black plastic interior and nicer seats...

Another thing to remember is that the vti-r has a sunroof, which may be undesirable on a track car (added weight) :P.

The vti-r has different suspension, rear sway bar, front strut brace etc, but if this is a track car i would say that most of this would be replaced anyway :).

I'm not too worried about interior trim or having a sunroof, as i'm thinking about stripping it anyway.

All suspension will be replaced.

Honestly this is my first project car so i'd be searching for a lot of info and seeing which one is more bang for buck, and no turbos! lol

Perry PM sent

Edit** I could also opt for a GLi
Do you know if the 98 model GLi hatchback came with rear disc brakes ?

If you are going to do a 5 stud conversion you will need to change your rear brakes anyway. In my opinion bang for buck buying a car in Japan and bring if over that way. Only thing is there is a added 3 months onto your dead line. Pretty sure sun roofs also take strength out of your car.

The VTI is sohc Vtec. I think they only come in sedan and coupe.
