aim: worn gear knob? not to worry! here a some ways to get it looking like new.

NOTE: they are actually two ways going about this, ill show you both. however you should decide which method to use depending on the SURFACE of your gear knob. Also even in hot weather it still is very solid, and does not smudge or melt.

Method 1: Draw with the crayon. This is the way i prefer to do it and i would recommend doing this on the type R gear knobs.

Step 1. clean the surface of your knob with a rag and degreaser. use a toothpick of needle, and pick anything dirt and old paint from the existing lettering.

Step 2. use your crayon and start colour in the engravings. go in one direction and keep at it till its all covered. dont worry about excess crayons being all over your knob.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m99/gxiang/DIY/Gearknob/DSC01013.jpg

Step 3. once all the letters are covered, slowly use a rag and rub the on the letters. now MAKE SURE you go in ONE direction otherwise your crayon will rub off. use medium pressure and give it a few rubs and it should start to come off.

Step 4. and your done. here are some pictures.

Method 2: Melt the Crayon. now i didnt do this in the end after it did work as well as i had hoped. The reason being, is because the surface of the type R gear knob is hard and smooth. dried crayon dont stick too well to it. however if you have a leather knob, this should work pretty well.

Step 1. clean the surface of your knob with a rag and degreaser. use a toothpick of needle, and pick anything dirt and old paint from the existing lettering.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m99/gxiang/DIY/Gearknob/DSC01004.jpg

Step 2. use a light and melt the crayon of your choice. let it drip onto the letters.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m99/gxiang/DIY/Gearknob/DSC01006.jpg

Step 3. once dry, rub away the excess crayon and your done.

NOTE: if you do decide to this method, take off your gear knob or use something underneath in case you get messy :)

looks like he's using cheap no brand crayons, hence the inconsistant colour. I recommend to use a higher quality crayon like craylola. Can be purchased at any reputable childrens store.

sorry for hijacking the thread but since we are talkin about refreshing the gear knob.

Anyone know how to refresh the metal part of the gear knob, its all scratched from rings that i wear on my finger and also by my watch. So it sort of looks cheap and old.

any idea's??

EK4R
06-04-2007, 01:55 AM
lol damn.
well i already made another one with plastic and it works....
melt the plastic and fit into the engraving and wipe excess away ASAP before it drys.

this wont melt for sure, but its alot harder and need alot of patient and careful work.
