View Full Version : what happens when you pull the lead out and a 1.5 civic?
curious, has anyone pulled one of the lead out while the car is running out of a 1.5 litre 92 eg civic? i did it tonight, and ended up costing me 200bux so far and still counting the cost. Apparently you can't take out the lead while the car is running. it blows up the distributor's coil. can anyone confirm this?

that is a silly thing to do. Question is why did you do it ?
ive heard of some cars , a lead popping off once in a while ( making a hektik WRX noise) but no burnt out coil ?
Usually The coil is burnt out after alot of attempts to start the car ( IE low on fuel etc) . the coil over heats and breaks.

Exactly what happened to me a couple months back. I bought some leads (thicker than oem) and while driving 2 fell off the dizzy  Since i had no idea what was happening i kept trying to restart it and bye bye dizzy. 165 dollars later i was back on the road and i put my oem leads back on, just in case.
I did have the fully sick WRX rumble for about 200m, but the car had absolutely no power, luckily i was able to get it up a hill and it died on the top so i just rolled it down to the service station.
By the way, why would you pull the lead off?

you cant realy do that on most efi cars,
we used to do that to do a cylinder balance test, but not anymore by just pulling leads, you can get car scopes that will do a cylinder balance test for you by disrupting the ICM signal.
so yes its normal to blow your coil by pulling a lead while the car is running. useually you also get a good kick in the pants from the HT
pulled it off cause thought the car was misfiring. figured if pulled one out i would notice the car running on the three cyc and hear the difference.. and then do the lead swap and determine if the lead was rooted...
just had the car tow into repairs. they reckon 400bux....
Not happy.
