Exhaust System on SOHC civic

Any info will help.

I am driving a 97 SOHC Vtec coupe (Auto trans). Was thinking of customising an exhaust system. But was advised by fellow SOHC owners to keep the stock pipe and go for the exhaust muffler only. Does that sounds logic to anywant here?

Xforce thunderball muffler, are they any good for a budget mod?

Are you after an increase in performance or merely a nicer looking rear end and exhaust note? Because if you merely fit ANY muffler, it'll do virtually nothing for your performance gain. For a VTi coupe would be looking at a 2" mandrel bent catback to free the exhaust up abit.
