when you turn the key... maybe not so much a grinding noise

more like ticking i guess.....

Dude man,

Check if you got spark. If you don't its probably the distributor.

I had similar problems... what i did was i removed the Dizzy and got it checked at Hanny's Performance. They pretty much gave me a new one for about $200. I put that one in place and everything worked.

He said he's able to clutch start the car and drive around.

Which means the engine cannot start up via the ignition. So perhaps the Ignition switch/barrel is busted, or the starter motor or Battery is gone.

Probably the starter motor...

a motor in its original state only needs 3 things to start.

they are spark, fuel & air. you just gotto work yourself back and narrow out the suspect part. Spark, work back from the leads, dizzy, coil, fuses, battery, etc.
there is a screw on the fuel rail to see if fuel is getting through.

but in your case, just forget all of that, cos it sounds like starter or battery.

We get this at work a lot. It's probably just your battery. Fis the most inexpensive things first. Maybe swap a bettery out of another car first and see if that fixes the problem.

hey guys,
im going to take my battery back to optima on tuesday to see if its the battery its 16 months old... hopefully they'll replace it

i grabbed a voltmeter and measured teh voltage... its currently at 12.8V

im actually able to jump start it with another battery, drove around for an hour tried to start the car and didnt work again.

when i have the lights on and the cars off, the lights are REAL dim.

Pretty safe to say the battery is gone?

battery is gone.
it measured 12.8v when the car is on or off?
could also be your alternator, not charging your battery.

car was off....

ive measured the battery at diff times, it was 10.6 at times after ive tried to start the car

once started and driving around for a bit
checked again and it was 12.8
thats why i suspect its the battery

the noise is a ticking noise or grinding noise ??????ticking noise is the battery

yeah battery is dead in my eyes. and as jdmTYPE R has said, ticking is the battery. and also the symptoms point to the battery.

thanks guys,

do you know if charging this battery will fix the issue?
or is it pretty much dead?

if teh battery wont charge / hold charge its pretty much dead.
Jump start , and drive around for awhile to charge it up abit.
Does it start firsth thing the next morning
?
Just go buy a new battery for like $90 dude.

Can you borrow another battery? Its either the battery or the alternator. If your battery is decent and only 18 months old id suggest you check with another battery first because its more likely your alternator.

stormridah

besides using another battery
is there another way to check if its my alternator?

EuroDude

Its gotta be the battery. If its at 10.6v when the engine is off, the battery needs replacing. It should be around 12v-13v when the engine is off, and 14v when on.

When a lead Battery goes completely flat, its never the same.

Go to KMart and get yourself a new Exide battery for $100

I agree, sounds like either the battery or alternator. Also check the alternator belt to see if its broken...coz i had a similar prob with my mx6. Thought my battery was dead...replaced it and then the new one died on me an hour later - meaning the alternator belt had broken off and there was nothing charging the battery while i was cruisin around!

test your battery with the car running when u get a new one, should be 14+ Volts. If it's not the alternators gone aswell.

I replaced my battery last week, man the car was doing some weird stuff, I seriously thought it had a short circuit or something, but was just the battery.

yeah was the battery guys.... replaced and is okay so far...

Mate check the voltage as the guy above said cause if its your alternator a new battery will fix the problem until you flaten the battery again.
