Hi, today we installed the Spoon quick shifter I bought from TypeG. Installation was fairly easy if you have the right tools. I was using the comptech shifter for a year and now the improvements I have noticed by installing the Spoon one are:
-Much slicker than comptech.
-Throw is about the same as comptech minus the notchiness.
-Stick is straight unlike the bendy stock, reduces the chance of a mis-shift
-Overall quality is the same as stock, but who cares? you cant see it anyway.
So in conclusion, the feeling is now similar to stock while being much shorter in throw, and the gearknob is sitting much lower than stock. Sorry I dont have the pictures as I don't have any cameras. But for those using comptech short shifter, you will definetely shift faster with this, and the slickness is just nice. No longer you have to use force to put it in a gear. Very worth the price.
Another thing I noted was the quick shifter does not have any writings at all, no SPOON, MUGEN, or "made in japan" or whatever. Just plain. But I got it inside a mugen box which says Accord Quick Shifter.

lol, I wonder why would he get the mugen if they are almost the same. And for knob's sake you even wont be able to tell since you can't see it at all when it's installed.

lol.. should be a nice one.. btw, its only the shifter without linkage? how's the comptech one anyway? and try to find hasport linkage and that's awesome..
:D

its a complete replacement over the stock shifter assembly, whereas the comptech one is simply a tiny extension you have to attach at the end of the shifter linkage.
The comptech one is good as it is only 50US, but you would lose the slickness of your gearbox. I had one before and I must say replacing the whole assembly is much much better.

yes, and i guess replacing the whole assembly will be smooth the change gear. if only the shifter, might have a problem with the gearbox in the long term use..

Have spoon fiddled with the geometry of the shifting mechanism, or just banged in a shorter lever?
Reason I ask is that making the knob sit lower means that the shifter is actually sitting further away from the steering wheel, I like the position of the stock shifter, it's just that the throw is far too long. The comptech one sounds like a good thing to me...

you wouldnt call it short at all until you see how SHORT the shifter of a 350Z or RX8 are!

shorter in height, or shift throw?

Shift throw. But it might have been the notchyness that made it feel shorter.

haha thanks for the tools kenny! I wouldnt be able to do it quickly without your support. Anyway kitty, the spoon one feels about the same as comptech, but I can assure you, you would pay an extra $200 over comptech to get this kind of slickness.

I was warned that the comptech ss would affect the gear synchro. huh?

Shift throw. But it might have been the notchyness that made it feel shorter.
It makes sense to extend the rod below the axis to shorten the shift throw. I'm not to keen on the idea of shortening the height above the axis as it moves the knob further away from the steering wheel...

When I get to try Aaron's Spoon S/S, I'll see for myself if it's shorter than the Comptech's.....

Nah, my mods are in my sig. The SS has not arrived yet as I am overseas at the moment. But it'll get shipped over the moment I am back! Yes, and I'll see you at the BBQ. Be warned that what is in my sig is true. Scraped bumpers, bent exhaust (swapped a muffler with someone else, so it is better now) and ground down aero fins. I took the chicken out of hte boot already.

So its about $250 AUD? Sounds like a good mod. Does it require more force because its a short throw? ie less leverage?
curik
15-03-2008, 09:53 PM
Definitely worth the money. Less leverage to get into gears and more positive feedback into gears

Mugen or Spoon better, nicer feeling?
Both are the same, from the same manufacturer. Spoon and Mugen don't make it in house.

Don't need the metal bushings if you have the mugen shortshifter. Feels positive enough. Don't want it notchy.
