ive been driving a b20vtec motor for a while now even in my itr and very impressed with the performance, but couple of things on the motor let me down. After talking to DYNODAVE about building another b20vtec we decided to go all out this time.We source out a b20 block with darton sleeve, standard crank balanced for hi revs with hi comp pistons, ealge rods, acl race bearing...headwork done by DYNODAVE cnc port and polish,we've gone oversize valve for the intake to get more air in...the head will put togther with titanium valves, titanium valve spring, titanium ratainers, toda C cam and cam gears:thumbsup: .we will be trying this set up with a elderbrock victor X manifold and then try it with Quads.....ARP head and main studs will be used to put them together.. gearbox build by bel garage running ats gears and FD with spoon lsd.:D here r some pictures of the motor...

I really dont care what power this build show's on the dyno I dont build dyno queen engines, all I am interested in is ET's and lap times, dyno's as you know are just a tuning tool. You all should know by now that its not just about building an engine that makes power you have to build a COMPLETE package to do the job required by the customer and 99% of the time they cant afford to do it and there built engine looks like a nugget because it was never finished off with the rest of the package it needs to show its full potential .

good luck with engine build.. spent the money it's worth every penny when you do the times..
just my advice.. with your FD get one that suits the car. 4.9 final drive is not always the best for a b20. with my car i found that it actually ran better times with a 4.2 (4.9 you will just be frying your tyres with more hp.)

Because everything in Aust is too expensive, thats why no one can afford to finish everything, and even though customers do flock out that kinda money, i don't really think that the "build engine" will be as expected - the only good engine will be their own show car...

You meant built engine right. Yes it's true there is heaps of "built engines" that don't perform. Probably has something to do with the complete setup or combination of parts which most of the guys have been saying all along.
Guess we just have to wait to see how this one goes.

A basic B20Vtec will cost around 5-6k but at this level if your paying someone ;) to build it for you and supply parts we have quoted N/A engine/gearbox combinations that go over 30k.The one thing I have seen in the past is guys start a build like this and then workout what it really is going to cost and never finish it correctly and then just complain how there built engine is a nugget, but even with the best parts money can buy in them does not always mean big power outputs its all about the combination of parts and gearing used.

I think what Dave is saying that with all the ancillaries to go with the engine your looking at a package of $30k. Its quite easy to build a "cheap" engine. Its all the stuff you need to go with it that blows out the cost. Likewise, anyone can build a "cheap" engine that makes power for 2 min before shitting itself, its building it reliably that costs the $$$$.

As I said they where quotes the jobs never went ahead because these guys think is easy to build a big HP engine for 10k.Thanks for the offer but I have never been one to buy engines from oversea's I like to do everything myself but I think guys are starting to know now that the JAP name brand engines are working out very well for the people buying and using them.

Like the one I just built for 5-6k they are a cheap package but with any engine once you start to really want power it does cost alot of money. The one that Ginganggooly has forsale is now fitted in a CRX and will be tested to the extreme's to see how far it can be pushed so far it looks very good and I just want to see what power it will make to compare it to a ITR B18c engine as they are getting harder to get and we need to start looking around for other types of engines to do conversions with.

It's the law of diminishing returns dude... When you want more power, you need to outlay disproportionately larger sums of money. Machining, bolt-ons internals, balancing, it all costs money...

i think a few "fully built" B20VTECs may have been let down by the builder...
in most cases, when people sought my advice, it really seemed like the engien had been slapped together, without much thought for combination...
or let down with poor machining quality...
or just poor tuning...
B20's have had a bad name, basically since kids in the USA were 'slappin them together' with no tuning and then breakign them....
immediatly they get seen a "weak" due to this...
B20's are only weak when the builder is compromised or the tune is compromised...
it doesnt take a genius to realise that rod bolts that were first used in 1978 Civic 1.2l engines wont cut it for 120kW+ engines going to 8500rpm...

well, the metal casing is, but not the cylinder right
pornstar
18-04-2007, 05:33 PM
careful luc, theres 2 common terms for dart blocks, so it can be abit confusing.
1) using darton sleeves, they bore out and resleeve your honda block with darton sleeves
2) there is an actualy dart block that is made in a dart mould which comes with the stronger sleeve from the "dart factory"
hope that helps ya mate

Hey Dave
What would be the highest compression you will go on a B20 VTEC with our pump fuel.

Hey Dave
What would be the highest compression you will go on a B20 VTEC with our pump fuel.
It just depends on what the engine is going to be used for and what the rest of the combination would be, weight of the car and gear ratio's all this would make a difference,I know this is not the answer you are looking for but not a question I can answer without knowing alot more info.

This is even harder to answer than the first question you asked me again way to many things to take into account when asking about gear ratio's, as a good starting point Hipowerracing posted somewhere his gearing for his B20Vtec and when you look at his setup it would be advice you would think very seriously about as he has run 12.3 very fast for a track based car.

You need to take into consideration things such as max engine rpm, gearbox ratios and tyre size (ie diameter). That is not all you need to work out the best diff ratio but it will be a good starting point.
