if its a dohc look for a leaking cam plug.

but its like $20 for a new one so its not a big deal.

any honda 4cyl:

- check rear seal of engine isnt leaking everywhere.

- check for any rattles in gearbox - even the tinyest little rattle.

- wheelbearings, jack up wheels and then shake the wheel from side to side etc to see if there is any play in the bearing..can also check the CV's while you're doing this.

- Look under wheel arches for overspray - sign of damage repairs..

- check colour of oil on dipstick.. if it's clean-looking it means the owner has either just changed the oil, or just topped up the oil level which suggests it's burning oil from worn rings etc. if oil is black that's OK just means is time for a service, but if there's bubbles in the oil - looks like coco-pops - then it means the head gasket has gone and there is water in your oil.

- check water in radiator, look for coolant - NOT water in there.. and look to see if there's any oily patterns on the top of the water.. oil+water = blown headgasket..

if you're serious about buying, take out and inspect the spark plugs.. see what condition all the cyllinders are in.. if plugs are covered in oily crap ( not just carbon) stay away from the car.. if plugs are white with crud buildup it means is running lean and or burnng hot.. can suggest some problems als..

check for leaks between the engine and tranny.

if its not too late look for cracks in the rear trailiang arm bushes, and check the ecu for fault codes.

the KM's arent too bad for a 12 year old car in my opinion

For a 92 civ IMO 147k's is pretty good.
