View Full Version : Random Painting Questions
Hey guys, im poor these days with uni, so have been going diy nuts lately:p
I want to paint my muffler matt black, and was wondering if you guys recon i should be using some sort of high temp paint??
Id say the muffler would never really exceed 100 degrees, i put a small drop of water on it after running hard, it didnt boil, but it did evaporate rather quickly.
And also primer, should i be looking for a high temp primer at all? Or will any type of metal primer do?
Cheers:wave:

since the muffler does heat up to a pretty decent temp.
don't you think it would be wiser to used a high temp paint?
just common sense. sure you can use normal paint. do you think it would last as long as high temp?

Ive had a good search around, ive seen 4 people do this diy, not one of them used high temp paint which seems odd. Just wondering if normal paint can last as long at this temp (say around 100 degrees), compared to life at room temp.
Im extreemly poor, i need to save every single dollar i can, high temp paint is quite a bit more than standard paint, especially if a high temp primer is needed!
To answer your questions -
Q. don't you think it would be wiser to used a high temp paint?
A. Yes, its a no brainer. Im heading to the hardware store tommorrow and dont have enough to buy high temp paint. Id have to delay my plans, and i cant see that ill have much time for this any time in the next 2 months. Im asking if regular paint can last ok at this heat.
Q. Do you think it would last as long as high temp?
A. No i dont, but if it lasts as long as normal paint at room temp, im more than happy.;)
So my question again, re-worded a little clearer.
Will the temperature of a muffler be enough to break down normal spray paint quicker than normal?

gotto ask a chemist that, i don't have the answer.
good luck mate
Might just go ahead and try it, find out for myself. Only $3.80 a can of spray paint at supercheap so will barly cost me anything extra if i need to start again in the future and do it with hi temp stuff. Will be interesting to see how well it lasts.
hey go buy some of those metalic paint and spray your tip! give it that titanium look instead
Yes regular paint will burn off more quickly than high temp paint. The question is how often do you want to repaint your muffler? You could use regular paint and just repaint it when you need to or use high temp paint and not have to paint as often therefore not having to buy paint again. Or you could skip the primer, because you don't really need it anyway with spray paint in the can now that they have been improved in the past years, and go with high temp paint only. I did my whole exhaust system pipe and all using high temp paint no primer and it lasted more than a year and still looked good.
Cheers mate, that helps a lot. I borrowed money of my GF this morning for high temp paint. She owed me the favor after she ran out of fuel 60km from home a month or 2 back. ;)

Hey bud  Im going for more of a ghetto/dont care for looks look. If that makes sence lol.
You could use VHT Brake Caliper paint, that should be able to withstand the temperatures fairly easily, they make it in matte black too ^_^
You will find a lot of high temperature paints such as engine enamel is normally glossy, rather than matte
