Just wondering if anyone has any tips on racing a car? such as launching or specific ways of shifting to get more out of a car?

Give yourself time, brake early, be smooth.

Hoooooo.... Busted!!!

Do a search and talk to some of the OH's trackday warriors to pick up handy hints. Also what BMI and try to pick up Tsuchiya's or Orido's or Nobuteru's or Kazama's Technique hahaha!!!

Best would be to pay for a half day or day driving course so you can learn and talk to people first hand and practice the techniques they tell you straight away and get feedback on how you are doing. Some places you need to use your own car, some places have cars for you to use. This will give you much more confidence when driving and give you some techniques to practice when you go to the track.

Also depends on your learning style, but I find it is easiest if someone shows me and I can try it straight away. Others may find it easy to read bout it, others find it easy to watch a video and can copy what they see.

Check your local track's website or give them a ring to find out when they have their next track day.

Practice, and lots of it

You need to be consistent more than anything else
Too many people focus on just going fast, you need to take it in steps...

Learn how your car handles different surfaces and be able to judge the surface of the track...

Practice with the xmas lights, races are won and lost at the start not the end of the strip

Track racing is complicate to say the least, compared to drag racing
Before going fast you need to find the limits of yourself, the car, the brakes and most importantly your tires or else you will kill yourself

Sub 12sec passes you only really need a helmet, but driving shoes make things easier the faster you go
Too much faster than that it's worthwhile seriously considering getting into proper gear

For track unless you are going to make it a one off type of thing, for heavens sake get a the absolute minimum suit, gloves, shoes and a GOOD helmet
I hit the barrier once after spinning out at 160 and hit the barrier at probably no more than 20km/h and that is still more than enough to cause moderate injury, the barriers aren't there to catch you like on the road they force you back into the track to protect spectators, basically it's pin ball

If your talking track racing - start with karts. They can teach you all the basics.

lol removing rotors and brake calipers is a great way to save weight. Install a stick against the wheel to slow down, billycart style.
