SO a few mates of mine think i should take the airbox cover off and go vtec'in everywhere. does it make a difference at all??

make the car slower, louder and it will use more petrol.
Thats about the only difference.

Yeh, to the sound, but not good for performance. :thumbdwn:

more noise does NOT equal +kws.

If you are going to do this, make sure it isnt raining outside :zip:.

cmon man, how would a couple of drops which COULD come up into your engine bay and COULD possibly land on your paper filter cause a problem.

I highly doubt there would be any possibility of rain causing a problem is your airbox is open

And what happens if enough water enters the airbox? Water get sucked into the engine = hydrolock. Only takes a short downfall and then your filter is soping wet and potential hydrolock :zip:.

are we just talking about taking the cover off? this means the hood is still down and the snorkle which points towards the front grill is still attached?

Purpose of airbox is to prevent hot air from coming into the intake (or in some cases like the 2r, to increase direct airflow to the intake.) Since the purpose of the intake is to maximise the amount of oxygen for combustion, taking off the cover is almost beside the point because cold air = more O2 than hot air.

Sp like ben says, car becomes louder, slower, and eats more fuel.

in a dc5r/s there is a hose from the intake manifold to the airbox. just unscrew the clip holding the hose and the airbox. its so easy takes exactly 2 secs...

I sat here and thought about it... not sure, but how does it use more fuel?

Less air per compression cycle would be my guess, meaning more fuel is added to take its place?

unless your driving around with your bonnet off or a hole in your bonnet you wont get enough water in your airbox to cause hydrolock, its hard enough with a CAI

i had the top of my box off for about 3 years

Nop, because our cars take into account pressure and air temp to work out how much fuel to add.

Thus hotter air, means the computer will add less petrol. You might not get power, but i dont see where more petrol gets used

lol i did this to my camry. it went totally shithouse.
sounded fast. but yeah.

are u seriouse? doesn't that mean that dirt can get into ur engine and stuff it up?

Depends on what car, on most honda with pannels, like the civic, when u open the box, air wont get filtered. But on the type r's and s2k (they have factory pod filter IN a box) Its just like having a normal pod, hence the noise

precisely, and the only time it got wet was when i pressure washed the bay every month, and even then it wasnt a problem

at a guess , hotter air might equate to higher tempo and running leaner , so the engine will dump more fuel in to compensate.

Actually , the truth is your driving style is ruined because of the loud noise , EVERYWHERE you need to "floor"it.

Back to back dyno Run.

S2000 stock airbox 12x.xx kw atw
s2000 airbox lid taken off 11x.xx kw atw

I can't remember the acutal figures but there were a 7kw difference.

a bit overboard there mike, it'd take ALOT of water to be at a risk of hydrolock... especially where the filter box lid is located in the engine bay

it wont cause any damage, you will LOOSE power and response but yes it will prolly sound pretty good.
i did it on my car and when for a few spins and the noise level was ridiculously loud :)

also.... when was the last time we had decent rain in melbourne? :(

i did that to mine, sounds pretty good but i did notice a drop in performance and it used abit more fuel. i'd leave it alone.

I'd de-restrict the airbox and use a differe filter but thats about it.

Heat soak and noise vs reliable power??

I choose reliable power :D:D

what if you have the standard box lid off and take off the resonator but replace that with a cold air hose. will power be comprimised?
