is there any disadvantage to using a pod filter with a smaller surface area?

What brand is it? As long as the bell mouth on the filter is the same size or larger than your intake there should'nt be a problem....

Smaller filtering surface area???

Well the smaller the surface area the more the resistance. Would also depend to the filtering material as well.

Dont do it... firstly it is elligal, secondly it will make youre car slower.....

unless its in a enclosed box or somewhere its not sucking hot air (like behind ur front bumper sucking cold air in) i wouldnt suggest u getting it... go for a CAI... :)

but as said above, aslong as the pod is bigger then the origanl intake it will be fine....

yeah, its for a cai... its bigger than the intake, its just not as big as other pods that i've seen.

You mean the neck of the Pod? You need to be more clear.

maybe a picture with the area ur talking about highlited could help a bit, if u whant ??

but from the sounds of thing i think u mean the neck... and obviously the bigger the neck and tube that the pod is connected to the more air the engine gets and the more air the better... so yes, more surface area the better :)

alritey, well, its not the neck, its the actual surface area of the filter element. like these two

edit: sorry, didn't mean to advertise. but yeah, difference in surface area, the one on the right being smaller

doubt there will be any disadvantage between the two, if there is it wont be noticable. just enclose the pod and you will get even results from the two.

Usually even the smaller pods flow enough to feed the engine. The limiting point is the intake arm, throttle body diameter, intake plenum size and valve diameter and lift. That's why between many different brands of pod filters of different sizes and materials, the performance gain in an NA engine is almost the same for all the pods.
