View Full Version : Mod-chipped. Stupid, yeah?

My car has been modchipped before I bought it, and vtec kicks in at 4500rpm.

1. It's pointless/crap/too early
2. Would I be using more fuel this way?
3. I'm losing some of the vtec power, aren't I?

Can 'yes' be answered to all the above?

ps: yes, i'm getting rid of the mod-chip asap.

YES to all.
VTEC engagement is optimized by the engineers @ honda at those exact RPMs for a reason.

Just one thing.......

The stock vtec engagment for your VTiR B18C is 4400rpm at WOT so your Xover point has actually been raised 100rpm

Thankyou!

Hearing 'YES to all' is such a relief, you wouldn't believe it!

Yes, it's my first car and found that it's drinking a tad too much. :( Would it be quite a big difference? I mean, it's kicking in a whole 1500rpm's earlier! For normal street driving, it's so pointless coming in so quick.

What?! That can't be right.

Isn't the change over point stock about 5500 - 5800?

Does someone have the official specs for this?

not for the P72 B18C. 4400 is the official stat,i can show ya a vid of when i had a vtec light hooked up if u want.

btw,how can u tell its changin at 4500,when my B18C was stock i could hardly feel/hear the vtec Xover, the IAB change was much more noticable at 5750rpm

yup the butterflies opening did something audible to the VTiR's ive driven - and not VTEC :)

I can hear it. It's a very obvious change.

Car came with a cannon, and air intake (pod style).

wow how much do you get out of one tank then?

Umm, I'm not exactly sure yet, but.. roughly 340-380km's?

I'll have to work it out exactly once i've finished this tank.

thats alrite i reckon....my civic vtir gets around 420-450ks with full exhaust and extractor and pod filter...wait is that actually ok?

Are you constantly changing gears at 4500RPM?

The chip is probably one of those that tricks your ECU into thinking there is more air going in, hence it dumps more fuel in to compensate. Remove that chip and enjoy better fuel consumption. Also, it doesn't affect your VTEC point, so don't worry about that.

Are you constantly changing gears at 4500RPM?No. Since I realised that it's chewing quite a bit of fuel, I don't go into the vtec range so often. :( So i'll change gears at about the 3900 - 4200 range, just a tad before VTEC get's ready to kick in.

It's not affecting my VTEC point? Really? I was allways under the impression that technically it should kick in roughly at 5500. =/

more fuel CAN equal more power - only if the car is tuned to take advantage of this tho.

If your VTEC point isnt adjusted , technically you are mislead.

Take off the dam chip and run the car normally.

Take off the dam chip and run the car normally.Believe you me, I can't wait to take it off.

I highly doubt it's been correctly tuned too.

Anyone in the South Brisbane area wanna help me remove it(that knows about these ECU's and how/where this modchip would )? :)

(i'm a newbie to the car scene. first car.)

Because these chips often advertise a power gain. And people fall for it and buy them. Can you tell me what brand of chip it is? Or at least post up a photo of it? The cheap chips that I describe do not alter the vtec point, unlike other interceptors like the VAFC (which come in the form of a nice control unit with display)

It's probably as you said, one of those cheap chips.

I'll open up my ECU tomorrow and take a photo (not sure what I'm looking for, but i'm sure someone here will be able to point it out).

Would this chip also be affecting my idle rate? Because I just turned the car on now, and it's idling at 1500. =/

or is the kind of chips that u put in on the temprature reading on the engine bay? could be it?
cold temprature reading makes idles higher ... well thats on stock ecu though ..

No, cold temperature of the coolant is what makes the idle higher, not the engine bay temperature.

That's the chip, but where does it say that it plugs into a temperature thing? :p
