i have tried several times to get this right without luck sump gasket keeps leaking.....Installing new baffled sump with stud kit

I torqued the the sump down to the correct torque setting (96 inch pounds b18c )but it seems 4mm off sump gasket squishes out the side

Is this normal
it seems to leak from the crank pulley end the rest is ok
What is the secret to getting the gasket to seal correctly
i have tried with gasket goo and with out and I am using oem honda gasket

i feel your pain man,
i really do

http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37870&highlight=dxs+sump+gasket

from memory,
i did it to factory specs and it didnt work
i tried again, still leaked
took it to a mech, still leaked
mech then used aircraft sealant, still leaked
i have tried 2 times since.. using hondabond and the gasket.. different methods.. still the same

there is no oil on the timing belt.. and the mech said it isnt crank seal..
but i am going to check the oil pumo and crank seal in the future when i do the timing belt..

people have success with using sealant on both sides and just stopping when the sealant comes out.. not the gasket.. maybe give that a shot..

If it is leaking from around the pulley then maybe it could be the front crank seal.. are you using a genuine Honda gasket.. Aftermarket sump gaskets are crap.

The other thing could be that maybe the sump is warped now from all the welding in the sump..

it seems to leak through the thread of the studs and out through the nuts in some places and others it comes out where the gasket has distorted
i have also tried the sealant on both sides of the gasket and stopping when the sealant come out. the bolts were very loose only got to 20 inch pounds which is a long way off from 96 which is the spec and it still leaked.. the gasket has split several times as well ...this is getting expensive replacing it each time

You are suppose to put sealent on the corners on the gasket. Other then that, if torqued up right and sump is not warped then oil is leaking from somewhere else.

sump is brand new
when you see a sump gasket done from the factory ,i cant see how to get it looking so perfect when doing it my self ...
i have put sealant on corner etc done everything ...its as if the gasket is too soft...
My be honda uses some sort of special jig to stop the gasket from comming out....(my conspiracy therory)

did you torque in the CORRECT order ? IF you dont , you can warp the gasket and it will leak.

what gives you the idea its a SOHC ?
ITs off the official honda B18c workshop manual you silly boy.

Anyway spray underneath with carb cleaner or degreaser to clean all oil off , then wait a few days of normal driving to find out exactly where it is leaking from.

For starters b18c sump has a bolt in the middle at the end between bolt 5 and 6 where your pic does not ...sohc engine has a hump in the sump which your pic clearly has at the end...your looking at the civic section of the manual...anyway

have done the degreas thing thats how I know its the gasket

Well i have tried a heap of things... 4 gasket down in the bin....
what i have done now is where it is leaking i have done it up as tight as i dare..( I have stud kit )so i will take it for a drive a see how this goes

you might need to get someone to do it for you. 4 gaskets later and still no go..

they kept splitting ..sound bad doesnt it...i like things to be right
i am still learning but i dont like paying people who cant build a lawn mower engine with out it blowing up...to change a gasket

splitting.. wtf?

and by stud kit, did u replace the bolts with studs?

maybe next time u remove the sump check and see if the contact is actually dry (just in case it may not be the sump).

maybe try to put sealant on both sides of the gasket.. and just do it up until the sealant just comes out.. because that should indicate that there is a seal. And not allow the gasket come out

I have replaced the bolts with studs its great
i have tried putting sealant both sides before ....it leaked ...But i am thinking that is the only way to get it to work..Once that sealant comes out it should be right....it makes sence

My only prob with that is there is no way ill get to the torque setting they say it needs to be done upto...

trust me no gasket is the way to go thats the way we always do it at work and it always seals just make sure both surfaces are clean with brake cleaner a good bead around the sump and around the holes and tighten it till you see it all coming out the side and it should be sealed
