AFAIK earlier and later type of calipers ( for the same model of car)

For example , on DC integras there is 2 types of caliper (DC2 and DC4) and one is slightly smaller than the other etc.
You distinguish by the pad design - mate it up to a schematic from a brake shop and they can tell u

no you cant AFAIK . They are different sizes / dimensions.
