Hey guys I need a hands up answer to know how many people out there are experiencing this problem with their DC5R.

Problem: Second gear is difficult to put in gear when car is cold.
Feels very notchy and not smooth like the other gears. It happens when gearing down from 3rd into 2nd... and from 1st to second sometimes grinds..

Download Bulletins
UK EP3 Bulletin http://www.intensedesigns.com.au/Honda-uk-ep3-servicebulletin.pdf

RSX TYPE S Bulletin http://www.intensedesigns.com.au/RSX-synchronizerbulletin.pdf

BOTH ABOVE CARS USE SAME ENGINE AND GEAR BOX!

Cause:
The roughness of the 5/6th Synchro cone surface is causing high friction which affects 2nd to 1st gear change quality.

Solution:
Solution is to get honda to open up your box and get parts changed.

To get honda to do this is the problem. I need a hands up from everyone who is experience this problem... the problem isnt from warn syncros its a manufacturing error... Note: Not all DC5R models will have this problem... its affected in a certain range... the more people I get to come out with this problem more chance we get of having a bulletin for honda service Australia to fix this issue..

What I need is for everyone who has this problem to list the below in your post:

1. Year and Month Made:
2. Current KMS:
3. Details of problem:
4: Under Warranty:

Thanks guys appreciate your time...
*PLEASE DO NOT POST UNLESS YOU HAVE THE ACTUAL PROBLEM.

Just a note: I will be taking my car to a honda dealer monday nite leaving it there over nite so the car will be cold next day getting there early in morning to test drive with a technician so he can see for himself..

Hopefully my gearbox will get worked on... I have no warranty so not sure if ill have to pay for this or not maybe just for labour as its a honda fault.. I don't mind paying aslong as they fix the problem! I will keep you guys updated..

then why did you say you did
anyway, for your warranty, if it is the honda warranty (as opposed to a dealer one) then yes the previous owner does need to sign it.

Well.. does the new Integras have the same probs? probably not...
they are not producing integra type Rs anymore .. so not sure whether it is a failure or what.. i dont know waht their reasons are

So, do you reckon it is the problem with all the integras?

yes i know problem. whenever i first drive mine i notice this too however i think its with all gears when cold. once the car has been warmed up and driven around a bit its fine. pretty sure its just the transmission fluid needing to warm up a bit to do its job.

how does yours go after you ahve driven for say 15 - 20 minutes? if you still notice it after that then it may be something else?

obsessionz
19-06-2007, 08:32 PM
its ok after 15-20mins but thats the whole time it takes me to get to work .... thats ridicilous .... and i even let it warm up for 10 mins in the morning .... so the whole way to work its notchy and grinds..

qstoria
19-06-2007, 08:36 PM
well i rekon in your case its a good thing that it doesnt stay like that all the time. not saying its good that it takes that long in general but i dont think there is any damage done to your gearbox.

how many kms on the car?

matt

nice, youve got a pretty good chance of it being under warranty still. if it is the 800-900 for the extended warranty is pretty good piece of mind hey.

i got mine when it was still under warranty, and i bought the extended warranty too, which i am not getting some work done on the gearbox under.

i will post up with some info once the work is done.

type S is different gear box .. might have a different problem to Type R our gear box is hard to select 2nd gear from gearing down from 3rd it feels notchy... and from 1st to second sometimes will grind ... its more a notchy issue doesnt go in smooth at all you can feel it rubbing against other metal bits ....

maybe you should let it warm up for 5 minutes.

S2K dont need to but most still let it warm up and then let the gear oil wear in as well.

maybe you should get a s2k ?

maybe you should read before you post i let me car warm up for 10mins everyday and i still have notchy second gear until you actually drive for 15-20 mins... the gear box cant actually warm up until you drive it...

Which i shouldnt have to do... the car should go in second gear like a breeze...

Major bump, was anything actually achieved?

From experience i have found that stiffer engine mounts and fresh transmission fluid helped the shifting substantially. I have my theory that the notchy shifting may also have something to do with the CMC for our clutches not moving enough fluid around, i have read that RSX owners that have installed Civic SI cmc's have noticed a big improvement in shifting feel, possibly because of the larger piston diameter.

Interesting that you may say this. I'm getting new engine mounts very soon and will be able to confirm whether or not it makes a difference.
Interesting about the CMC as well I'll have to have a look into it

DC5R = 2nd Gear Notchy When cold hard to select 2nd and grinds
DC5S = 3rd gear pop outs when cold and grinds

Fault with design on both gear box's unless your gear box seems fine from new till now.

I've had new hardrace mounts in my DC5R for 2 weeks now and can confirm that this indeed did fix my particular problem. After installation I no longer had any gear grinds, haven't had it once since installation.
