Sup guys, Im currently questioning alot of my mechnics and tuners howmuch my car can really handle.

My car atm is a EJ8 Civic Coupe Vti. D16Y8 SOHC VTEC

It has a Greddy turbo kit, with a TD04 turbo, hks SSQV BOV, FMIC, 440cc injectors, upgraded fuel pump and decomp plates put in.

The vtec has been turned off on the motor and im not quite sure why but im sure there was a reason behind it. (i bought the car pretty much turboed already)

Some people say im safe to put the psi up to around 12psi, some say 10.

So if anyone has a similar or knows more about my engine setup, would u be able to help me out.

Thanks

i dunno why anyone would want vtec off? maybe check the signal hitting the vtec solenoid? proper engine management and good tune 12psi no probs, but 10 safe to give you some buffer room.... and on a small td04 havnt got much probs

most of the time ppl dont calculate how much psi a motor can hold, as psi differs from turbo to turbo, but most D16's will hold 200 ~ 250 whp with a good tune.

Look at HP more than psi. Our D series engines have piss weak rods

couped_up is running a similar setup on his EJ8. Its running 8psi from memory. 8psi daily is good. i guess it could run 10psi occasionally though.

Small rods on that motor so they wont handle too much power for long. The best thing to do is speak to some tuners with plenty of experience tuning these cars ie: dyno dave, toda racing etc and work out with them how much power they will tune your car to given standard internals.

Give James a call from Hondata or pop down to his workshop, he’s located in Melbourne, that’s my suggestion. James has been turbo’ing Hondas for many years and owns a 400kw b16 CRX. James will give you honest advice it costs nothing to ask questions. His number is 0417 875 785

Thanks guys yeah was just wondering why would anyone turn off the vtec? I got the car like that, and I thinkthey place called protek or something like that turned it off whenthey put the turbo kit in. Probably to make their life easier?

Anyways just a off the topic question also, Does the VTEC on the SOHC models (VTi) really make much difference? I never owned a SOHC vtec so i dont know what its ment to do, ive had B16's but they are obvious what they can do.

Anyways thanks again guys fromt he help.

100000psi is a little too much IMO

So you're thinking of increasing to 10 or 12 psi.....what are you currently at?

You could run it on 50psi if you really wanted to but it won't last very long

The more boost you have the sooner it will blow up, the engine isn't really engineered to run boost, but 10ish psi will probably be fairly safe I would say

PSI isn't everything, having bigger intake runners, throttle body and piping will reduce pressure but not necessarily the flow or power of the motor

Thats pretty pathetic considering that 420hp isn't that much power when it comes down to it (even for a stock k20a). Only making 420hp at 42 pound, no wonder it blew up, the charge temperatures from the turbo must have been hundreds and hundreds of degrees = bang.

Edit: Ok I watched the video and they actually made 588hp, which is pretty impressive for a stock motor regardless of lifespan.

Taken from cheesefrog's site,
high enough boost? :)

This weekend has been incredible. 3 cars in a row built with one goal in mind: insane power.

The first car belongs to Robert, with a nice simple setup.
95 Integra GSR
9.5:1 H23 VTEC
stock port H22 head with valvetrain and stock cams
stock intake manifold
stock throttle body
1200cc injectors
Fast-Turbo.com fuel system with a single bosch pump
JGFab top mount turbo system with GT4080R
Hondata S300
FJO injector driver
AEM 5 Bar MAP sensor

Unfortunately the torque did not pick up on this run but previous pulls were 574 and 568 tq. Big congrats to James @ JGFab and Robert for building a monster.

The next car belong to Michael. This crazy MFer drove his 98 civic coupe from Shreveport to get tuned. Michael has been struggling to get good power numbers out of this car for the past 4 years. After all the work it looks like it paid off..

Stoopidfast built B18C shortblock(3 years ago)
stock B16A head with valvetrain and ITR cams
Edelbrock intake manifold
overbored throttle body (64mm I believe)
RLD Fab ramhorn turbo manifold
Precision T67 P trim ball bearing turbo .81 A/R exhaust
Stoopidfast intercooler piping(2.5" originally built for his B16 setup 4 years ago)
Precision 600hp Intercooler
Walbro 255 intank pump
PTE 1000cc injectors
AEM 5 BAR MAP sensor
Neptune engine management

this was a bonzai pull on the dyno, boost was set to 33psi. The fuel pressure dropped as the pump couldnt keep up. The car was consistently pulling 675ish hp @ 29psi with good fuel pressure and 84% duty cycle. After the battle on the dyno michael loaded up and drove back to Shreveport. Sick sick street car. Thanks to Michael for coming down to show Houston how its done in LA!!

The last car has also had a struggle over the last year. Aldo and Art from 1320 brought down their Civic hatch with an all new setup, and looks like they will be ready to beat up the track real soon.

1320 built 11.5:1 H22A
1320 ported H22 head with crane roller rockers and VTEC killer cams
Custom turbo system with a Precision T71GTQ
Golden Eagle intake manifold
1600cc injectors
3 bar map sensor
Neptune engine management
boost set to 29psi

Aldo is a track junkie. keep an eye out for these guys out at HRP. Killer job guys!! Thanks for coming out.
