Hi everyone,
I have a 1996 CRX (Del Sol), its got about 115,000kms in it now and is still on the original shocks and springs. Its getting a bit "boatey" in the corners now (rolling) so I need to replace the shock absorbers.

Any recommendations on shocks for this setup? My budget is preferably below $900. I am in Melbourne. Car is totally stock including 14inch rimms, std exhaust and no plans to change anything dramatically in the future in terms of lowering or bigger rimms, i like the stock look. Looking for handling equivelant to or slighly better than the OEM shocks would give.

Any advice/recommendations on what to get and where to shop appreciated.

if you want OEM style get some OEM ones.

Dunno hoe much they'd be though.

JDMYard has very affordable Skunk2 shocks. Sounds like exactly what you're after:

looked at koni yellows, about a grand for them which was pretty steep and outside my budget. reds looked ok for price and will be apparently bit better than OEM.... any experiences with red's?

I have had 2 del sols with standard shocks and super low king springs and they both handle great just with that combo of shocks and springs.
I would say get some new shocks and super low king springs - it will handle fine :) sure, coil overs would be better but they are just sooo expensive!!

hehehe was just about to post that:thumbsup:

i've got D2 coilovers for my gen3 crx and it handles awsome, i had the stock shock and kings superlows in it before and they were absolutly shocking comparded to the coilovers

i was also after just some new shocks and using the existing superlow springs when i was changing sussy, but i'm so glad i stuck it out a little longer so i could afford the coilovers, dont believe what most ppl on this forum say bout D2 coilovers, most of them are just passing on third or fourth hand information. i've had my coilovers for almost 1/2 a year and not a single problem, some even longer

if u wanna have a look at how it handles on a crx pm me and we'll meet up

^^^I agree, they've been tried and tested for us Nissan boys anyway (when i had a Nissan). An i guarantee Nissans get driven a lot harder than Honda's...

And no problems. Very comparable in quality to G4s.. however their damp/spring rates are different naturally..

i highly recomend u save up a little bit extra and get the coilovers, cost about $1100, and then another bout $100 for ITR/eg6 LCA's
u can get decent shocks/struts like koni yellows for ur price range, but it wont perform as well as coilovers

i got mine from Newcivic/BB's gargage

another vote for coilovers. had mine for about 6 months and haven't had a problem with them at all.

Will out handle anything on roundabouts.

DSP26: Nissan's getting handled harder then hondas!?!?! You need to come to some QLD motorkhana's. (a proper handling event :p)

Coilovers are of course great with a adjustable ride height on all 4 corners. But after the initial installation you still need to set the car up on racing scales to get the corner weights of the car the best you can. Of course you don't have to, many ppl just do it by sight/tape measure till it 'looks' right with the right wheelarch gaps to the wheels and the car is level; but you are not getting the max potential out of the package.

If you have no intention to modify your car much even in the future, and your budget is below $1K, I would say why not a stiff rear anti-roll bar with subframe reo and some cheap shocks such as monroe, KYB and tokico. The rear sway bar makes the most difference in terms of how sweet the car turns in the corner, and sounds like you need new shocks ( at least the fronts anyway ) if your car floats like a boat atm.

Btw, the koni Reds would still do the job, just that the Yellows have a bigger adjustment range and stiffer ( has more damping ) than the reds at the default minimum settings. But since the price diff is is not alot you might as well go for the yellows. I had a set of koni yellows in my E30 BMW 323i with stiff springs installed in 1992, they still feel good as new even now, after close to 200,000kms of city driving! With the koni's adj you can compensate wear to a certain extent by increasing the damping.

I was so happy with all my previous koni experiences I just had to buy them again for my EG.

Hey EG30,

Yeh I dont want to spend the money on coilovers, I have a definate budget and need to get this sorted out now as car is performing poorly, its not that i cant afford to get coilovers, but cant justify the expense as the car is a weekend driver and I have other priorities with my money.

KYB's fitted are $850
Koni red's fitted at $1050
Yellows are $1170

So the red's look like a good option, most of the good parts of the yellows but without adjustable dampening. I only do about 12,000km in the car each year so im not going to wear them out for a few years - in which time the car will be 15-17 years old and I will have most likely sold it :)

Just ordered Pirelli P6000 tyres for all round, will do the shocks in a few weeks (tyres were REALLY bad as well and I think some of the source of bad handling).

$850 for KYB AGX's?

If yes, thats a killer deal... AGX lines up against Koni Yellows... Both adjustable also

Im not sure on the model of the KYB's twincam, but i think the Koni red's will be the best bet (think the KYBs woulda been a std model not the sports), ha i have the wheels you want on my car, they a bit scratched up tho from the last owner who was a chick hehe :)
