Looking at upgrading (yes i think upgrading) from a EG si to an '87Peugeot 205 GTI. Has anyone driven both of these cars? I know i'll get alot of bias comments :) but what does everyone think?

In the 205 you sit more upright, steering much faster and sharper than your EG.

Engine has sharper response and much better lower end torque but gets rough past 5500rpm from memory, whereas your ZC eng pulls cleanly all the way to 7K. I assume you are chasing the 1.9L version Mark1? or the 1.6L version? I've only driven the 89-91 models over the years with 1.9L.

Suspension wise, out of the box the 205 gti handlings like a kart with stiff rear bar and very easy to modulate life off oversteer. In the EG you need to install a stiff bar for the same effect but not the same finesse. They weight less than the EGs too.

build quality in the 205 is a far cry from the Jap built Hondas of course but I'm sure you are already aware of that.

they have an active forum in Aust too, eg the aussiefrogs and few others i've came across over the years.

The 87 model has the 1.9L = 88kw but can achieve 0-100 in 8.5secs because it weighs less than 900kg.

Biased or not, I'd stick with your EG. I'm not really fond of peugeots after my friend purchased a '98 306 and although it isn't 'that bad', quality is fairly mediocre compared to jap cars.

So unless your passionate for french cars, it'll be a downgrade. Go with a 4age corolla if you're looking for a different car of similar age.

i think u have more aftermarket support in hondas.. parts for peugeots are more expensive and harder to come by i think.

Spend da money puttin a B series in the EG, you won't regret that!!
Just buying a stock peugeot will not be a big upgrade if at all!!

How is this an Upgrade? I think the si with its 16v Twin Cam is a much much more superior engine and platform to the '87 Peugeot.

Infact, its probably much more superior even to the last Peugot I tried..the Gti 180. Its much older..yes, but still more superior. :-p

I had an EG, put some bigger swaybars on it, a camber kit and some koni yellows and nice low stiff springs and the thing would have eaten pretty much anything on corners, on a tighter budget, 22mm sways would make a big difference at under 150 bucks each with new bushes also!

if you've watched any top gear, you'd know that french cars are bad. the reliability of them just don't stack up to anything like Hondas. It'll cost you alot to fix problems especially with older ones. In my opinion, you'll be down grading.

Stock compared to stock :)

Hahaha...I'm basing this on when my Vti was on totally stock original 13 yr old suspensions to the new Peugot 206 Gti 180.. :-p Maybe its just me.
The Vti stock 13yr old sussys were good enough to run in the 53s at Oran Park South.
..and...I still use them as street suspensions..very comfortable...

Not to mention A/M parts are going to be a biatch to find!!
Especially compared to an EG.

They are a great platform and so many parts available :)

206 GTI's handling are crap compared to the 205 GTI. I'm comparing it to the 205. I dislike 206s.

The main reason for my upgrade is I think its a better platform to start with because:

I have an 16v mi16 engine to eventually install in it.
The handling should shit-all-over an EG.
Parts aren't expensive. I talked to a guy who lives near me and owns 2 205GTIs (races one), he seems to think parts avaliablilty isn't a probem. Presuming I do all the work on it myself it shouldn't cost to much.

Main downside I'm seeing is appearance... Lets face it... 205s are ugly as anything compared to an EG.

If you watched topgear you would also know that topgear rated the 205 as #3 on their 100 fastest cars list (you can find the list on their website somewhere). :)

This really is a tricky decision. Almost a practicality VS performance decision.

your comparing apple with oranges
the 205 gti would be the top of the line for that model
so if you had a eg6 sir
it would shit all over the 205 gti
why not base your conclusions on a standard 205?
stick with the eg put a b16a in it and see how u go racing your mate with the 2 gti race cars1

Because he is shopping for a 205GTI, not a standard 205.

Thats going a bit too far. Stock for stock a 206 gti180 would kill a a stock eg in almost every category...:)
