Hey
got an EK1

i've heard that as your car gets olders, u should change the type of engine oil you use.

At what point is this change made? how many kms? and to what type of engine oil do i change to? (currently still using honda FEO)

FEO all the way. I still use FEO on my car and it's a 95' b16.

generally mineral based oils with a slightly higher viscosity. Depends if you've got burning or oil loss problems.
If there is no problem keep using the one your using. Otherwise if you have problems step up slowly until you get the result you want

You can go synthetic as well.

I've been using 5w30 Synthetic on my EK1 for the past 3 years. No oil burns or loss. But I service my car every 5000km's.

yea FEO engine oil is always safe to go wit...what type of oil you use also depends on how you drive and how much u push ur car and how regularly u intend to change your oil...
atm i am using motul...its good stuff...but can get quite pricy esp if u want to regularly change ur oil...

i change my oil and filter every 5000kms and i use FEO honda oil
i drive a 92 crx with 204xxxkms on it, runs the best on this stuff and doesnt blow smoke, still burns a little oil, but all hondas do so thats normal

FEO every 5000Kms is perfect

i tried valvoline syn power 5-50 full synthetic and it came out looking heaps worst then FEO after only 3000kms!

like wtf...

trying out ELF oil now..

5 - 50!!! Fark thats thick man.

I use 5 - 30 synthetic every 5000k's. I think its pointless spending money on mobile 1 or motul or something like that when you're gonna change it soo often.

I reckon just buy some mid range oil and change it often.

Nah for what he's got its not. Ricer try the Shell Ultimate 5w40
I run a 3w30 Castrol edge. Which is a synthetic, but hydro cracked i believe.

Generally if you are burning oil or loosing alot of oil you stay away from synthetics

I change my oil + filter every 5,000km also, it seems to be the most regular & keeps from having problems. Use to use FEO, but went synthetic instead.

What does he have? Forged pistons?

No, being synthetic or mineral doesn't matter as both still burn when in the combustion chamber. Synthetics are nicer as they don't gum up and leave as much carbon deposits when burnt compared to mineral.

I use Motul 8100 in my dc2r i find that works perfect service evry 5000km , or as most others have said go the FEO... mayb pricey to some but well worth the spend

If ur getting services done at honda be carefull that they are actually putting in your FEO and not some valvaline stuff, that some bodgy techs did at honda when i worked there...sad but true fact

Apparently Honda uses magnatec now. Only use FEO in the Type Rs.

Not true. It's because that dealer you asked uses Magnatec that they buy in drums (my dealer in Sydney did that).

if a car runs very very very rich
like black smoke at 4000rpm
does it affect the oil in any way?

If you run rich, then your combustion chamber would have more carbon than usual. The oil that comes into contact with that carbon should help remove it. Your oil will turn black quicker than normal cars. Oil turning black is not a bad thing. It means that your oil is working to help remove the carbon.

Change your oil every 6 months or 5000km and even FEO will do its job well.

Yeah, every 5000km is good, even if you don't drive hard. FEO + filter is only $45 or so.

Hey aarong, i always found that synthetic always seems to burn faster than the mineral when you start to burn oil.

What do u mean you dont need to top up every too often? So once i get my car back from service, how long before i need to top up if im not using FEO?

Looking at your profile u own a pretty new car so you wouldnt need to worry about topping up since the engine is new and shouldn't be burning oil. But to be safe just check your level every week or 2 if you want.
