View Full Version : Once off gear grind - any damage?

Hi guys, I have recently purchased an 07 Euro 6MT. Anyways, I accidentally grinded my gear today for probably <= 1 sec. I was down-shifting from 3-2 and didn't find 2nd properly. As soon as I heard the grinding noise I disengaged the clutch fully and corrected my shift.

Just wanting to ask if this (first and last time I hope!) can cause any significant/permanent damage? Or are the parts involved fairly robust?

Thanks for any opinions on this!

very very robust

honda gear boxes are quite strong and can take quite a beatng

i dont think uve got anything to worry about

no temporary or permament damage

just think man, ppl learn on manuals, u know how to drive and u crunched once...

16yr olds crunch 5 times evryday, lol

also i cruncehd gear 3 to gear 2 once or twice wen i was learning on my civic

itll be fine

dont stress, its going to happen occasionally.

yes it does do a small amount of damage but

a) nothing youll notice unless you do it all the time

b) nowhere near enough to give you trouble within the life of the engine.

there also is a difference between what you described and what Ash_ describes.

if you just have the clutch too far out or something and it crunches, its just your error.

but if it cruches when the clutch is fully disengaged (ie your foot is pressed to the floor) then its the synchros that are g0ne.

^his car is brand new

he just took too long to go from 2nd to 3rd

by the time it went into 2nd the clutch was already too far out

yeah i know, thats what i said. i was referring to ash_'s case because his description fits a synchro problem.

It's no problem. Don't worry.

If it crunches everytime you put it into 2nd, it's probably a synchro problem.

if this happened as soon as you started then driving then maybe let your car warm up some more. i find my gearbox will be far smoother when i have warmed the car up for a few minutes then drive. perhaps the manual transmission fluid does its job better when warmed up.
