Ignition Output Signal . Ignition Output Signal is generated by the ECU to pulse the ICM ( Ignition Control Module, also known as Igniter ) which collapses the ignition coil to create spark and control Ignition timing as well as dwell angle.

Aim:

Diagnose code 15.

Required:

Basic Testing

- Digital Multi Meter
- paper clip

Symptoms

If you are getting code 15, your engine may be running normally. Your ICM could be dying or you could have a problem with power to the Distributor.

Basic Test

Ensure your Distributor is not failing. Listed for metallic type of noises coming from the distributor.

wire side of connector

**** Voltage Test ****

Set your multi meter to DC Volts ( 20v scale )

Step 1( Distributor Voltage test )

Connect the Black Lead from your multi meter to the chassis for a good ground. Back probe* the fatter black wire with a yellow trace going to the Distributor.

KOEO* you must get 12v

**** Duty Cycle Test ****

Set your multi meter to Duty% scale

Step 1

Check the ICM for its input duty signal from the ECU, Connect the Black Lead from your multi meter to the chassis for a good ground. Back probe* the ICM with the Red lead while the sensor is connected.

OBDO = Pin 7
OBDI = Pin 7
OBDII = Pin 7

KOER* at idle ( 800RPM ) you should get about 10%
KOER* at 2500RPM you should get about 30%
During Cranking duty should be around 10% - 15%

You can also test the Ignition Output Signal at the ECU connectors

OBDO (http://ecu-man.com/diy/pgmfi/ecu/PGMFI-pins0.JPG) = B15,B17
OBDI (http://ecu-man.com/diy/pgmfi/ecu/PGMFI-pins1-2.jpg) = A21
OBDIIa (http://ecu-man.com/diy/pgmfi/ecu/PGMFI-pins1-2.jpg) = A20
OBDIIb (http://ecu-man.com/diy/pgmfi/ecu/PGMFI-pins1-2.jpg) = A19,B13

If you do not get a signal, replace the ECU

**** Continuity Test ****

Set your multi meter to continuity. This setting is mostly a picture if a sound .))) when you touch the Red and Black leads together on your meter it should beep.

STEP 1

make sure the Ignition is off and unplug the Distributor Connector and the ECU Connectors for this test

Continuity test between ICM and ECU, Connect your Red multi meter lead on the ICM, Back probe* the Black multi meter lead on the ECU Pin (http://ecu-man.com/diy/pgmfi/map/PGMFI-MAP-contECU.jpg)bellow that suits your car.

OBDO (http://ecu-man.com/diy/pgmfi/ecu/PGMFI-pins0.JPG) = B15,B17
OBDI (http://ecu-man.com/diy/pgmfi/ecu/PGMFI-pins1-2.jpg) = A21
OBDIIa (http://ecu-man.com/diy/pgmfi/ecu/PGMFI-pins1-2.jpg) = A20
OBDIIb (http://ecu-man.com/diy/pgmfi/ecu/PGMFI-pins1-2.jpg) = A19,B13

your multi meter should beep and read short or 000.0ohms. Place the black multi meter lead on a good ground source. You should not get beeping, this is testing for short to ground.

* Notes

KOEO = Key On Engine Off

KOER = Key On Engine Running

Back probe the sensor, use a paperclip and push it into the connector then touch/clip your multi meter lead to the paper clip

I'm getting a code 15.

I think I put the wires from the MSD to the ICM the wrong way round and stuffed the ICM.I re-connected the stock system,the car wont start,it turns but doesn't fire.

Do U think this be the case John?

Cheers mate.

hehe,I can't cause I ripped all the MSD gear out and threw it in the bin!

The whole problem started from a loose wire/connection i.e dodgy wiring and I didn't fix.Meh,ya learn from ya mistakes...

Just as long as the cars going :)

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

I retrieved it out and fixed it all up :p

It was down in the big green bin on the road for 3 days.It gave me the shits so much but it was cause like I said the dodgy wiring and it's all kinda new to me but now I see it and fixed it :thumbsup:

I'm happy I got it back out,my auto needs all it can get...better combustion = :thumbsup:

I will be doing a DIY on a MSD install too since I had it all out and could take a pic describing how the system goes together easily :honda:
