hey guys... looking for some ideas or suggestions.
I have a pretty good brand/model alarm system in my EJ8 civic. But ever since i've owned the car, the alarm will consistenly randomly go off. For a while i just turned the siren off and all was fine.
Lately i've decided to turn the siren back on as my interior has much more value now, and my area can be pretty dodgy.
Since i've turned the siren back on, and it has been getting colder, My alarm will go off pretty much everynight without fail, either late at night, or early in the morning.
I have complaints from neighbours, i have security at work calling me and complaining that my alarm is always going off, and i am sick of running out of apartment block naked and half asleep to turn it off.
Noone is attempting to break into my car, and when i try to set off the alarm my self i cant do it?! like i shake the car, knock the doors, mirrors, windows....nothing!!
WTF..
I am leaning towards gremlins being the cause at the moment, cause i cant find anything this.. and gremlins can be bitches.

Funny you mentioned gremlins cause once when I parked my car on the streets on a cold night, the central locking linked to the alarm suddenly f'ed up and won't unlock at all... had to use the good old fashion keys to unlock the car!
Then a few days later it's fine again!
Gremlins I tells ya!!!

Often the source of the problem is the hood switch.
Check that is is secure & the wiring running to it is not frayed or able to earth other than via the switch.
If the wire connection leading to it is expose, this can offer a potential grounding point.
(It's the one that looks like a compressible pin under the bonnet)
Hope that helps
Cheers

i agree... but it could be any of the door switches being dodgy as well as the boot.... i kept taking mine back to the installers as we initially though it was my shock & microwave sensors.
if it was cats however you'd find scratch marks all over your bonnet. usually coz its the warmest part of your car when you get home late.

Another couple of things to check - adjust the sensitivity, check ultrasonics , etc etc.

havnt got ultrasonics. And not sure how to adjust sensitivity..any pointers?

Yeah, sounds very much like what happened to me. It's particularly bad during the colder months. What i ended up doing was disconnecting the bonnet switch altogether as there's nothing under there that anyone would want to take although i guess it'd be just as easy to do what TODA AU suggests.

could it be the wiring getting dry jointed or short circuited..?
i mean since your cars in a cold place, moisture could build up in the wires..
just my 2cents but

sensitivity is adjusted by a small "screw" on the alarm itslef under the dash

i had the exact same problem in my civic, i thought it was the bonnet switch to, but its not. its not the central locking to, as the alarm only goes off at night when its cold....the problem was the extra sensors, mine was a glassbreak sensor. i had to adjust it down, and never had a problem since. the module should be near the compartment, under the steering wheel. just need a flashlight and screwdriver.
p.s. could you please rate me..thanks

make sure the module is secured properly. COuld also be a faulty sensor?
I think the unit should work with the sendor unpluged so you could try that also to check if the sensor is faulty

Id put money on the glass break sensor. They can be very sensitive to high frequencies. In or out side the car.

If you don't find the problem get a licenced installer to look at it.

????? How does a glass break sensor work?

breakglass sensor usually only come with expensive alarms with options.
It sensors glass breakage by the high pitch noise. Unless you know you've got it i don't think that's your issue

hmmm that could be the problem indeed maybe those cats are making noise or somone is and making sensors think there is glass breaking, turn the sensitivity down and give it a wirl shouldnt give you troubles anymore hmm reminds me to install my alarm this weekend any1 good at it ill pay them....
Maybe some thief is setting off your alarm everynight so that you get sick of it and go down and turn the siren off. And then BAM!! Bye bye MuMu Chrome Pedals :>)

maybe check your car battery as a weak one will set it off randomly (like my one did)
be quick to fix it. New law nearly coming in NSW.Police have power to charged for any loud noise after midnight such as music, karoke, including car alarm. up to $600 i reckon :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn:

...i am sick of running out of apartment block naked and half asleep to turn it off.
For this problem I'd suggest sleeping with clothes on, as for the alarm check wiring and grounding very carefully. If you have to spend a whole day looking at everything spend the whole day you'll sleep much better knowing that you're system is working properly.

That technique actually gets used a fair bit, you'd be surprised.
