View Full Version : Y1 Transmission rebuilding

Researching while I still have a few synchros left...

I'm looking into getting my gearbox rebuilt and adding an LSD.

I don't really want to just get all the exact same parts from Honda, because more than half the expense is labour and I figure I should use that investment to make a BETTER transmission.

If I'm getting custom parts, I want a closer ratio gearset with a higher final drive. I plan on using the car for low top speed events, such as tarmac rally/hill climb etc

I don't want a dog box and I don't plan on throwing any more than 130kwatw at it. Budget $2500ish for transmission.

Questions...

Who is well reputed for doing this kind of work in Melbourne, ie custom rebuild (involving custom parts)?

Straight or helical gears? Why?

Could I still use OEM synchros taking this custom path? Would I be better off getting custom synchros too?

Any other constructive advice or suggestions?

Thanks

as far as i know there are no off the shelf FD's for cable boxes

Seems to be bugger all aftermarket support for cable boxes! Including clutches and flywheels! The conversion to hydro seems a blind spot for most mechanics once you start talking seriously and stop just hypothesising..

What would happen if I left the final drive the same and just changed the size of gears etc?

Whats wrong with your current gearbox?

Most of the synchros are buggered. I COULD rebuild it with new OEM parts and it would be fine... but like I said in the first post, doing that would cost up to $2k anyway, so I figure I might as well pay a bit more and walk away with something that will allow faster shifting and closer gear ratios.

Can you get a type R Gearbox and just bolt it up to the y1 bellhousing? So it's cable operated, but uses type R gearset, 4.7 Final Drive and LSD?

kyle: I wish! Apparently it's possible to use the ITR box, but not maintaining the cable operation. THere are hasport hydro/cable conversion kits that aren't specifically designed for my model and aren't a sure gaurantee to solve the specific scenario I am faced with. But a new ITR box is like $2800 anyway

Seems to be bugger all aftermarket support for cable boxes! Including clutches and flywheels!
So you know, the B16A cable & B16A hydro use same flywheel & clutch cover.
The difference is the clutch disc.
Cable is 220 x 25 x 24
Hydro is 220 x 26 x 24
Measurements are Disc OD, Spnine OD & No. of teeth.
So a TODA flywheel for B16A~B18C can be used,
Further, in the Exedy range the following clutches are available:
Sports Tuff - Heavy duty
Sports Tuff - Heavy duty cushion button
Sports Tuff - Heavy duty button
Sports Single - Sports Orgainc
Sports Single - Race Ceramic
Hyper Single (Clutch & flywheel)
Hyper Twin (Clutch & flywheel)
Hyper Comp R (Clutch & flywheel)
Exedy also manufacture a lightweight flywheel to suit the sports tuff & sports single clutches.

Dylan, we rebuild our cable boxes using oe parts from other d series gearboxes to get the right ratios, its an easy job for us, and you'll get a heap of change from the 2,500

intriguing andy, care to expand?

what about synchros? are those from the d series?

Thanks Adrian, I shall keep that in mind. So if I wanted Sports Organic, what flywheel do you guys offer to then suit that clutch with my gearbox?

Andy... looking forward to the reply, as is fellow EF8 owner, DXS.

so the clutch is only different because of the spline size?

in theory you could bolt a y1 to any b series, using the stock flywheel to that b series?

was just wondering what parts were interchangeable..

and if the y1 uses things like synchros and bearings from the B series or are they from the D?

I've had another mechanic talk about rebuilding with ITR gearset, but something about if you change the Final Drive then it complicates the compatibility of the LSD...

Give the OZHonda people a technical explanation, pornstar... unless it's a trade secret or something

We got a b16a gearbox, with complete ITR gearing, 4.7 final drive and LSD. One awesone gearbox for b16a, revs super quick. However we did not built it so don't ask how we did it.

Just find a replacement gearbox, hard to source but you can find one or two. Pm if you get stuck.

interesting fatboy..

anyone have any documentation/manuals on replacing synchros?

Search around, not hard to do. I would recommend letting the specialist do them. If you know how to take out a gearbox your saving yourself most of the labour money.

You will need special pullers and a skill you dont get from books lol.
