its still a fair way down the track, but i thought i'd get the info now.

in 2009 i will be on exchange to Japan for a full year as part of my uni degree. import rules state that if u reside within Japan for atleast 12 months, you can legally import the car into Australia when u return. im on exchange so i guess i'll be on some type of visa. does that count as residency? if not, is there any loophole that can be exploited?

cheers.

Read here for all the requirements you'll need.. Since you're going to Japan there are a few extra requirements (eg parking approval etc). Nothing wrong with going over there like you are, so long as you are there and own the car for at least 12 months.

NSXFTW !

You should call DOTARS to check if you would qualify to import the vehicle...
You need to have owned it for a minimum of 12 months, which means you have to buy it soon as you arrive there...

Living there for 12 months, buying a car before you leaving, storing and importing a year later doesn't count

ide be gettin a toyota/nissan personally... chasers, aristos, leopards, cefiros, laurels as well as all ur skylines etc. :D

hav fun neway... but i do remember i had a mate who lived in japan a while ago and was looking to bring back a car but scrapped the idea because it was going to cost him to much to keep it in storage over there for the designated time period before he could bring it back?

u can't just buy a car in japan and leave it in storage for a year, you have to prove that you use the car on a daily basis to be able to get an approval for importing.

No you just have to prove that you were in the country for the 12 months or more of ownership...

Don't have to drive it or anything

In Japan it's hideously expensive
Probably cost p.a as much as the car
