i have an EG8 Honda civic 1993 SOHC GLi Sedan and i think it has a D15 series engine. redlines at 6500 RPM. I was wondering if people know what what rpms should i be driving at and at what rpms would damage occur? i know honda engines are fairly decent at withstanding abuse but am unsure what i am doing if i drive at 3000-4500 rpms. This is why i posted in the newb forum. Done 142,000kms with regular logged services.

decent posts appreciated.

i dont c wat could go wrong if ur driving at those rpms...
no damage would occur really if ur engine is spot on..

coz once it goes past redline it fuel cuts anyway.so i guess ur rpm is limited in a way so u dont blow stuff up.

typically on a slow day i drive to 3000rpm max

if its fast day i drive all the way to red :D

3,000rpm to 4,500 RPM IS NORMAL MAN !!

what u worried about ?

ur car probably revs at around 3,000rpm @ 100kmph

It's fine, the only problem will be that you use more fuel at higher revs. Apart from that it'll take a beating so I don't think you've got much to worry about.

absolutely nothing to worry about. my brother has one of these too with 280,000kms. thrashes it every single day and did not even change water pump, timing belt or seals at 200,000kms :D still runs great and never misses a beat

edit : does anyone know the exact engine model for this tpye and year?

Well... you can't really say that

In the end it is a machine. Sometimes strange things happen.. It could happen when ur driving it like a granny or when ur hooning it. Depends how lucky you are :)

so really as long as i maintain it correctly it should be fine.

Thanks for your posts.

Yeah until the belt snaps and his engine eats it's self alive

Engine wear at 6,000rpm would be roughly twice as much as it is at 3,000rpm
It's like driving 1000Km at 2,000rpm and driving 500km at 4,000rpm...

jst keep it serviced, but like dc2 says, its pot luck at the end of the day

i dnt think he really cares... thrashing it at 280,000kms without major service? does that honestly sound like a person who cares about his car? :p

Whatever...
Your brother is the only one who stands to loose out for the sake of like $50 every few months
Imagine maintaining small trucks, every service runs you quiet easily upwards of $400 every month or two

wow, u seem to take it more seriously than he does and its not even ur car.

the economical driving for most manual cars is shifting between 2000-3000rpm, its ment to be the point where it uses less fuel for k's. below 2000rpm the engine works harder to keep the car running and going thus more fuel consumption is the rpm is too low the engine shuts off. above 3000rpm again the engine works harder thus more fuel consumption.
to go to high rpm range it will use alot of fuel as it works even harder, however if you continously abuse the engine you have to give it good maintenance or the engine will have problems, but this is a long term abuse thing. in relatively short term, redline is the factory limit to which the engine can rev up to and not do harm, over redline there is a chance of blowing your engine if you sustain it. however the ecu should be programmed to not let you go over redline, you can try rev over it, but i think it limits you so you cant stay over redline long enough to have a damaging effect on your engine
so if you drive normally and want to rev abit shifting betweem 3000-4500rpm is ok, its pretty normal driving.
anyone correct me if my info is wrong.
thanks

Don't baby your car especially if it's vtec'd/turbo/performance. Give it a good squirt everyday to keep everything in check, keep to the regular maintanence and that should see your car through a long and healthy life.

lol yeh, the whole point of vtec is to actually be in vtec mode!!!! haha.
your cars done around 140000km, just get the most out of it and get a conversion or sell and get a new car later on.
dont wait til ur just about to sell and go redlining. lol
