Hey yall,

How can the handbrake cables be evened out cause I took out my handbrake boot today and saw the cables being pulled at different strengths. Seems like the cables are in different lengths?

Is it best to take it to a mechanic or can it be a DIY?

Cheers

You can adjust it yourself

normal for it to be uneven to a limit.

Is this within limits?

The Handbrake cable often gets stuck that is why it is uneven u can try taking the cable out and putting some lubricant down the cable to try to loosen it up or u can just replace it. its not hard to do. ur gonna have to get under the car to undo the cables though. so u better have some ramps or just jack it up.

Even on a new car like the Euro, having the cable ueven like that is common.

so your sayin that it is normal and nothing can be done about it? it feels like as if it isnt "holding" much of the car. just barely holding the car, which is why i always put it in gear when i leave.

Just tighten up the bolt then, so theres more tension on the cables with less pull ..

How many clicks til you can't pull anymore? It should be 6-7 clicks.

to set it to the right tightness, make it click 3 times and car should stop, 1st click shouldnt do anything , 2nd should start dragging and 3rd should stop the car, dont go over board and have a run up and try to do it, but just a lil move forward so you have some movement

i have done up the nut to its maximum. and yes it clicks between 6-8, but 8 is pushin it abit. is there anything i can do, to align these cables up?

If you have the nut at maximum and you can get 8 clicks, it's time to change the brake cable. Your current one has stretched too much.

what do u mean by maximum? what i was tryin to say is the nut is at its lowest point on the thread, as in closer to the hand brake switch. 8 is really pushing it though, 7 is max i would go to.

Thats normal man, it pivots on the spot like that so no 1 side gets more brake applied than the other. It's like a mechanical proportioning valve.

aarong: Can you not adjust either side at the rear brake shoe at all?

What is your objective? To even it out or to reduce the number of clicks to 6?

If it is to even it out, don't bother. It's self adjusting (up to a limit) so that both sides bite evenly.

If it is because you've already maxed out the nut and the cable is still too loose, then it's best to replace it. Once the cable has extended past its design limit, it will stop stretching and will snap instead.
