Anyone here got the Sat Nav thinggie for their FDs? The ones from China - OEM looking ones, that replace your stock headunit. Apparently they're all sold out. Put up pics if any please, and if anyone has any idea/recommendations as to where and if I should get one? Thnx!

Hey anansting - i found this site on the net that has a right hand side drive one, not sure how good it is and what maps the GPS has, its $950 for the OEM GPS unit and dash.
http://www.autodvdgps.com/oem-factorystyle-radio-for-honda-civic-righthanded-driving-all-in-one-multimedia-player-higher-quality-p-752.html?zenid=h0m4l09mvnp5rvan4dpggjumo1?currency =AUD

I'm trying to decide whats better - get the Double Din dash + a standalone 7" GPS/DVD unit or to get one of these OEMs.

aero

i read on here somewhere that the oem unit is not worth getting. it costs more and the processor is slower and worse than most aftermarket double dins u can get

I'm down for a Melb meet as long as there are more than a few FDs! :P

SirG - Yeah I saw that, thanks... but I don't know why the price difference (The other was 599). A double din fascia costs between 180-220. Finding an aftermarket sat nav audio system for 380 is near impossible right??

WTF guys, my girlfriend's brother spend $300 on a soundsystem for his car - a headunit and 2 front speakers...

Do you think its more related to the speakers, or the headunit?

CBF double din, I like my OEM stacker, but i'm happy to replace speakers, add an amp and subby.

Stig
12-08-2010, 10:22 AM
ive replaced everything lol

xenonkuraz
12-08-2010, 12:32 PM
The hu makes a big difference to sound clarity

ej20i
12-08-2010, 02:21 PM
the head unit is the driver, the speaker is just responding to what the head unit is telling it to do.
so if ur head unit is weak sending out weak signal to strong speaker, the speaker will project weak
if your head unit is sending strong signal to a weak speaker, the speaker will project the best it can do

ssllyy
12-08-2010, 02:32 PM
To clarify:
Weak HU + good speaker = weaksauce, with speakers trying their best, solution: replace HU
Good HU + weak speaker = weaksauce, with speakers bottlenecking the goodness, solution: replace speakers
Good HU + good speaker = ???

My question is: is stock HU decent enough? i.e. good enough to just throw in an RCA convertor and run a subby + amp?

In anticipation of: "why dont you just replace the HU"
I like the OEM look of the stacker, I've heard that the stock HU is of decent quality, if this is true and someone could confirm, I think it would be more COST effective to just get an RCA convertor to throw in a subby and amp, as opposed to buying a new HU + double din, and having a decent stock HU sitting in the garage waiting for you to refit it a few years down the track.

Stig
12-08-2010, 03:46 PM
"i.e. good enough to just throw in an RCA convertor and run a subby + amp?"

round 1 - ive done that, i found that the sub just overpowered the oem speakers cos the speakers couldnt keep up with the bass from the subs, had that "this is not a quite right feeling"

round 2 - so i ditched the head unit, ran an aftermarket one with the sub and oem speakers, it was better and had more control of the bass levels but felt that the oem speakers still lacked the clarity

round 3 - swapped all speakers and never looked back since, did lose an arm and leg in the process though

ssllyy
12-08-2010, 03:48 PM
Sorry to hear about the arm and leg =[

Guess it goes to show that you can't skimp on these things.

Stig
12-08-2010, 04:02 PM
what you could do is in order to keep the stock head unit is get a sound processor which upgrades the the signal from the stock head unit and run aftermaker amps/speakers/subs off that

thats if you're anal about sound, but if you're just an avg joe even running a rca output from the head unit to signal the sub is perfectly fine

its just preference

I'm just gonna condition myself, and tell myself that I dont need it, and I dont want it. Hopefully by the time I realise that I've been lying to myself, I'll give in, and go ahead and lose that arm n leg.

HAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

i didnt really modify my sound in my FD that much
all i have is clarion dvd deck, alpine type S front and rear splits and coustic 4 chnl to amp em and kicker mono with JL W1

in my GE i went all out with Alpine ipod deck with alpine imprint running
front JL C5 rear JL C5 with JL 4 CNL HD AMP with mono HD Amp running JL W3
and im thinking of upgrading my sound in the FD now

curtis265
12-08-2010, 06:11 PM
Could you please elaborate on this sound processor thing? Is it a little addon or something?

feels shitty beign beaten by a $300 HU and 2 speaker system

Stig
12-08-2010, 06:16 PM
its a sound processor which upgrades the signal from the oem head unit which has rca outputs which you connect to amps then powers your aftermarket speakers, i had this running in my car for a while

http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_cleansweep_pages.php?page_id=79

alpine has one as well, bit more pricey but a bit better than the jl one

rockford fosgate has one as well but their site crashed so yeah... lol

The only 2 options available seems to be the FD2R one that comes with a badge or the Vision CF one that comes without one.

Stig, how much does this JL cleansweep thing cost? I'm suddenly craving this sorta thing... oh and how much is installation too?

oh and it says

Q: Can I use a CleanSweep CL441dsp and still drive my
speakers from the factory amplifier?

No. The CleanSweep CL441dsp outputs are specifically designed to drive aftermarket amplifiers and may not be compatible with OEM amplifiers. It is intended to be an interface between the OEM audio system and aftermarket amplifiers and speakers.

Q: Can I use a CleanSweep® CL441dsp and still keep my factory speaker system?
Yes, you could, but it does not make much sense. The factory speakers generally benefit from the OEM equalization curve and would likely sound worse with a corrected signal. The CL441dsp is intended to be an interface between the OEM audio system and aftermarket amplifiers and speakers.

looks kinda hopeless if i don't get a fullon system :(

hey guys.

just in my garage at the moment... and i'm trying to remove my front bumper to install my hids at the moment but its really pissing me off lol.

I basically followed this guide http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/lighting/7830-diy-bumper-headlight-removal.html
except i couldn't find the 10mm bolts he removed at the corner of the bumpers.

I've got the corners popped out. except the bumper area underneath the headlights are kinda stuck.

help?

curtis265
12-08-2010, 11:43 PM
fark that, don't need to take the bumper off. connect ur HID kit all up, and then do a regular bulb change, and then hide ur ballast on that bar connecting the chassis bar to bodywork - much easier

I've also got hid kit for my fogs as well, and i think i have to remove the bumper for that.

Xpire,
if u want to take ur front bumper off, it takes me 1 minute to take it off
the clips at the top of the black cover in the engine bay,
the clips all under the front bumper in memory they got 8
and the two screw on the edge of the bumper on top of your wheel
just a phillips head.

and pull the edges out and push it forward from the back edge of the bumper
and voila its out!

My H11 hid kit is slightly different to my HB4 kit. There are two spade connectors coming out of the bulb...

I've connected both my fogs and lowbeams the same way, but only the lowbeams work. What am I meant to do with these spade connectors?

Edit:

Got the fogs working, spade connectors were meant to go into the original headlight connections. All done! Ballast locations aren't too great =\ and now i'm too lazy to put my car back together...

Stig
14-08-2010, 10:28 PM
yea, hence i upgraded to an optima yellow top

xenonkuraz
14-08-2010, 10:42 PM
yikes. what kind of sound system though? will I be ok just running a couple of subs? amp rated at 600watts max

vlixcool
14-08-2010, 10:45 PM
you will get light dimming normaly if you dont have caps for your subwoofer, depends on how many watt is your sound system. but eventhough i have cap, still i upgraded to optima yellow top and put hks grounding kit

xenonkuraz
14-08-2010, 10:53 PM
Yeah I was just about to ask if I should install a capacitor.

Can someone clarify,

should I ground my cap and amp separately?

i.e

power cable -> cap
ground cable -> cap

cap+ -> amp+
cap- -> another ground point

and my amp has two 25amp external fuses, so will the one 50amp power fuse (close to battery) be enough for this whole setup?

xenonkuraz
14-08-2010, 10:56 PM
I couldn't find any real place to mount the ground cable in the boot...so I stuck it on the taillight screw. Would this be ok?

Another question...

I'm planning to follow this guide:

Installing a line out converter/rca converter

#
Step 1

Locate the wires running from the head-unit or factory amplifier to the speakers. In some cases you will find these wires behind the head unit, but it may be easier to go directly to the speakers.
#
Step 2

Once the speaker wires are found, use the wire strippers to remove 1 inch of insulation from each one. Attach the left channel of the L.O.C. to the left speaker, and the right channel to the right speaker.
#
Step 3

Solder the L.O.C. wires to the speaker wires and seal the connection with heat shrink or electrical tape. Secure the L.O.C. to the vehicle. Plug in some RCA cables to the L.O.C. and run them to the amplifier.
#
Step 4

Adjust the amplifiers' gain levels to a medium setting. Turn on the stereo and adjust the volume to a comfortable listening level. Use a small screwdriver to adjust the gains on the L.O.C. up until distortion is heard, then turn the gain down until it goes away.
#
Step 5

Turn the volume up on the head unit and make sure that there is no distortion present in the amplifier. If distortion is heard, adjust the gain on the amplifier and L.O.C. accordingly.

Do I need to strip the wires from behind the stereo, or can I just go straight to the speakers? I'm planning to connect the converter to the rear speakers...which would be much easier than taking apart the dash

ej20i
15-08-2010, 12:46 AM
theres a grounding point in the boot if u lift up ur carpet
dont use the bolt from ur tailight, ur tailight will start dimming
on another note,
please dont use capacitors,
it will only do damage to ur amplifiers
is like ur amp is not getting a constant feed but a short burst of power
ive seen so many amp blow up because of the owner thinks by using a cap it will sort out problems
no it wont it may seem like it
but all its doing is soilving problem on the face by covering it up and not looking inside what is the main problem
lights dimming is normally poor grounding

Okay awesome thanks guys :)

Anyone know if it's ok to connect my converter directly to the rear speakers? Or should I go closer to the source i.e front speakers or behind the stereo?

Also, for the guys who have a LOC already in their car...

is it necessary to run a remote wire to the amp from an acc source too? because my LOC only has 4 wires for left and right speakers

ej20i
15-08-2010, 08:59 PM
u can run em from the back
yes u do need to run remote wire from acc coz thats ur turn on wire for ur amp
run it from the fuse box, easier

You need 1.5 screw thread, 1.25 aint gonna fit on the fd mate. Make sure that its 1.2x1.5 and that its got 16 normal nuts plus 4 locking.

our pitch is 1.5 not 1.25 as ekay1 said

Xenon Kuraz,

u need a test light and the take off the bottom part of the driver dash like the light grey one and on top of the fuse box there should be hella lot of wires
just use ur test light to which one is an acc power

+1 fk yea they wil have a huge effect

Lug nut information
Aftermarket lugs are made for aftermarket wheels. Not only for "wheel safety", because nobody wants your rotas, but because the seating on the inside of the bolt is correct. Stock wheels have a ball seat while aftermarket wheels have a conical seat. Dont be a DUMBASS and put aftermarket lugs on your stock wheels, otherwise when you make a thread asking why your wheel fell off, I'll point at this thread and laugh.. then say sorry. If you do have a stock spare or steelie spare in your trunk but aftermarket wheels make sure that you keep stock lugs in your trunk.

there arent any pics of 215/40/17 on 8" wide rim on tyrestretch.com. probably because 215s are made for 7.5" wheels, which means its not much of a stretch. they have pics of 215/35/18 on 18x8 rims... not much stretch in them. i still say u should get a good stretchy tyre in 205/40/17 for ur wheels. that would look better and u can drop it on its nuts.

i believe you dont need to replace your battery, get a torch light and check your battery indicator color. i believe you just need to recharge the battery, need at least start the engine every 2 days for brand new car.

I don't want to get a mugen kit and look like everyone else. Like aero says I'm gonna lower it but not ridiculously and get rims. Also something else to finish the look but just wait and see :)

Here's some pics I took today...

Next mods: mugen wing :)

Those wheels look exactly like mine, which means you've got a '06, not an '07 like in your profile?

I think I've seen your car around, do you drive around the city at all?

as far as i know the ings body kit has no replicas, or at least not that i know of so it will probably cost ulike 3-4k to get the rear bumper lol. Its nice but not much diff from the Mugen RR anyway. Not much diff between both. Only diff i went with was the Type R spoiler instead of the Mugen RR one, and a front custom lip lol

xenonkuraz

Yes it's an 06 ;) read back say 20 pages if you wanna know why I put 07 :p

But yeah I drive around in the city heaps

just a question - when getting ur car repaired and it wasnt ur fault - does the insurance company need an invoice from the panel beaters of where your parts came from and how much etc? or can the panel beater just give the insurance company a price of how much it cost them, then insurance pays them out?

cos i've heard yes and no from people sooo ye T_T

Stig
23-08-2010, 01:18 PM
if you have full comp and the accident is not your fault usually the insurance company handles everything, benefits of full comp :)

black8thgen
23-08-2010, 01:33 PM
well i just called up and insurance said the panel beater will handle it and just bill nrma directly... so... i can get any kit i want? =D

xenonkuraz
23-08-2010, 03:52 PM
Just left my spoiler at the panel beaters...won't be done for 1-2 weeks :/ at a cost of $300 fitted...

should've been bothered to take it to dt panels lol

no not really, they usually plastic weld the existing damages and respray it, unless its damaged beyond repair then its different story

they should either fix it or find a replacement. I highly doubt they will give you money to buy a new one.
