Just a quick update. Finally found some time today to do a bit of wiring:

Tomorrow I will have my boost gauge mounted too.

should have gone ALL out and did a full mugen guage swap so all the needles etc.. match ;)

lookin good but!

is the guage mount held down by sticky tape?

xenonkuraz
21-07-2011, 10:50 PM
lol haha yeah that would have taken heaps of time lol...

umm the gauge pod isn't held down by anything atm because I tried double-sided tape but i was too thin and didn't fill the small gap between...any suggestion?

ekdez
21-07-2011, 11:25 PM
3m double sided foam tape..

the same stuff you use on the back of your misses mugen visors.

it will be a b!tch to take off though.

initially I wanted to buy GReddy ones but these worked out to be $100 cheaper, I got them quickly and the fittings are more suitable.

DuffyFD
24-07-2011, 12:45 PM
thanks! the rpf-01's are sitting at home now :) They were too weak offset for me. they were 17x7.5 +48 and 17x8 +45, whereas these are 17x8 +30 all round, much nicer fitment, and not too hectic for a dailydriver.

Now I need desperately to roll the guards. scrubbing and screechin everywhere

Looks clean mate well done =]. You'll prob have to shave off or relocate the bolt that screws the rear bumper to the rear guard cos that will proh scrub like a bitch and damage ur Tyres lol

Kenninho
24-07-2011, 07:54 PM
might wanna check ur fuel tank neck, mines scrubbed like crazy

DuffyFD
24-07-2011, 09:16 PM
I'll be taking off the wheels each week to see the damage. The only issues im having are outer guard / wheelarch issues.

When you roll the guards, how did you approach the rears? It looks like they're reinforced..

Kenninho
24-07-2011, 09:25 PM
I got mines professionally done, but what he did was he bent the guard out since it was a "U shape" before rolling and then rolled it. He suggested to shave off the rear bar bolt, i guess you can zip tie it.

DuffyFD
24-07-2011, 09:37 PM
Yeah I have a mate with a guardroller and I have a heatgun so I was going to give it a shot doing it DIY.

I got a little way today with a rubber mallet but I'm scared to belt it too hard; I don't want wavy guards.

Kenninho
24-07-2011, 09:39 PM
yeh make sure u take ur time ay, but seriously you'll be guaranteed happy when u pay someone to do it. my fronts are wavy haha, until i bought pillowball coilovers =)

btw Kenninho your exhaust is ****ing delicious!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/xposure2010/5888574174/sizes/l/in/photostream/

That's the next thing I gonna work on. Im thinking to delete the resonator for some more sound, and then weld a decent exhaust tip on the stock backbox. Should give the car a bit of grunt, and will cost me next to nothing compared to buying a branded exhaust (as much as they sound awesome, I can't justify the $$)

Kenninho
24-07-2011, 09:45 PM
haha that ain't my FD, that's mikewl's... I just did a shoot for him that's all

a few pages back he had a photo of that exhaust welded by himself. I can tell you it sounds awesome

Found a leak in my oil sandwich plate today. Not happy. That's what I get for not buying GReddy parts :(

Anyway, some interesting facts after 15 min drive (haven't driven my car since friday):

Water temp sits at around 75-80 degrees

Oil temp peaked around 70 degrees

Oil pressure is 3bar (43.5psi) at idle, 5.5bar (80psi) at light cruise, 6.5bar (95psi) at 4000rpm and peaks around 7.5bar (100+psi)

Boost is still yet to come lol :P

EGB
25-07-2011, 03:51 PM
Im currently running 17x8.5 +30 225/45/17, I rolled the rear guards myself with roller and heatgun, turned out well.

I do not suggest doing the fronts with a roller, bend them out by hand, the front fenders are considerably weak.

xenonkuraz
25-07-2011, 06:32 PM
Guys this is freaking me out. Decided to change my oil and oil filter today and had the car on stands for a while. When I finished I took it for a quick drive and I noticed that when I depress on the clutch I can hear pressure escaping underneath the car.

Is that normal? Never heard it before! What could it be???

I rolled my rears last night, and they're not completely flat, but they're about 1/2 the width, which is just what I needed.

I did have trouble with the rear bar screw, ended up bending it back, and I only scrub when the car dips really deep.

Hey guys need someone who's good with tyres to help me out lol
My friend got some rims for the fd 18x8+45 with 235/45/18 and the tyres are chunky to the point where they hit the strut of the front. Would it better to get new tyres eg. 225/45/18 or 215/40/18 and chuck on like 5mm spacers as its going to be lowered on springs or just run larger spacers and roll the guards? Thanks in advance

Kenninho

i reckon get stretched tyres (225's should do it) and roll the guards, don't run spacers

For 18" rims you should be running 40 profile tires not 45. Your speedo will be way off and may affect braking. So I think you will need to get new tires if you want to use those rims.

aero
03-08-2011, 06:20 PM
if its just the tyres hitting the strut, then a 215/40 or 215/35 tyre should be sufficient without the use of spacers. they will look pretty sunk, but if u dont care about stance then it will be fine. if ur afraid that the rim itself will hit the strut, then u could opt for a spacer as well.

For 18" rims you should be running 40 profile tires not 45. Your speedo will be way off and may affect braking. So I think you will need to get new tires if you want to use those rims.

Thanks for that evolution. 35 wouldnt hurt either would it?

if its just the tyres hitting the strut, then a 215/40 or 215/35 tyre should be sufficient without the use of spacers. they will look pretty sunk, but if u dont care about stance then it will be fine. if ur afraid that the rim itself will hit the strut, then u could opt for a spacer as well.

Hm... 215/40 and 5mm spacer doesnt sound bad either. Just want to make sure it works so it doesnt cause more trouble

i ran 5mm slip spacers.. no problems =] they were custom made to the hub size tho..
just have to insure that the nuts are on tightly.. and there is no gap..
also.. the only upgrade would be extended lug nuts.. and open ended kicz nuts to finish it off

Remember if you want insurance to pay out in the case of an accident, then spacers will really hurt your chances.

Depends how big and how low I believe.

In WA it's 2 sizes up and 1" wider for rims with height at a min of 100mm clearance from lowest point of the car.

My understanding could be wrong though.

I think it also depends if the wheels were the cause of the claim. Eg. rejecting a claim for hailstone damage just because your wheels are oversized. I had comprehensive claims approved even though my wheels were not within specs.

just expensive to maintain for a daily basis, even if you leave it at home and dont drive it, it still costs money

changing all fluids alone cost me ~$350, and that was me changing it, workshops charge around 800, and you are recommended to do it on a regular basis

petrol is also another killer

you need a daily lol

most of my mates brought evo 7's before me, and didnt think it through, maintenance killed them so they all sold it within 6-12months of buying it

hey guys.. wondering which struct bar is better for our cars...... the V style one or the conventional one?

Stig
12-08-2011, 07:29 PM
imo the front of the fd is pretty stiff, if you look under the the plastic cover where the wipers are you see a massive cross bar running across the car

i would get the cusco v mount though, looks sexier

is it better than the conventional one? no idea lol

xenonkuraz
12-08-2011, 11:19 PM
Mate as Stig mentioned the FD already has a pretty stiff front with the bar under the cowl. If you were to buy a conventional type strut bar you'll need to hack up the front a bit as it won't go straight across IMO.

Go from my experience and don't get the cusco 3 point unless you want it for bling bling. I had one and although I noticed better handling it really gets in the way of things and probably does not work as well as a normal strut bar.

mikewl
12-08-2011, 11:38 PM
ha. by conventional i meant the conventional style designed for fds .... it's not quite straight (yer tat one lol) sorta bendy on the ends. probably more worthwhile to get a bigger sway bar. thanks for the advice anyways..

ej20i
13-08-2011, 08:25 AM
If this is going to your first suspension tuning, id go for the rear parts first, now the rear u can either go for the top strut bar (but u need to cut out your boot lining), or bottom 4 point strut which makes a whole lot difference and most importantly sway bar!

So you can correct your FD understeering and you'll have more fun

with adding front strut, ur just adding the understeer and u'll get frustrated, trust me, i was frustrated as i did the front end bit first

mikewl
13-08-2011, 11:24 AM
understeer is gay seds my e30. haha... alright so you reckon swaybar then rear top struct bar.....i dno about the 4pt strut i aint that hectic on the road. Is that rear top strut bar worth cutting the carpet lol?

curtis265
13-08-2011, 12:17 PM
rear sway bar should be first priority IMO

ekay1

aero
16-08-2011, 12:32 AM
Yeah, those coils are a bit weird. I had to put the rears on max height when I had some 18x9.5 +30 wheels with 235 tyres and no camber arms. There was only about a 2mm gap between the rear guard and tyre. I could get around on flat straight roads okay, but bumps and turns were aweful. To the point where smoke would pour fr
the tyres rubbing on the guards lol.

The coils do lowering very well, but are mot so good at raising. Just take ur wheels off til u can get some smaller tyres

.k.
16-08-2011, 03:34 PM
Yeah Sorry Bao :(

On another note - stock sussy back in and now when on highway and around 110~ i randomly get periods of a few seconds each where the steering wheel shakes a lot? :S

Is it as simple as a wheel alignment or something else?

DuffyFD
16-08-2011, 04:09 PM
Wheel alignment will usually fix this. Can also come from uneven camber or toe.

Sometimes it may be due to lower control arms that are on their way out too. When the rubber gets old and loose you get too much play.

Also check that your wheel nuts are all tight, but if it were loose nuts you'd likely hear clunking too.

mikewl
17-08-2011, 12:02 AM
yer those coils are good for lowering..... it's a bitch for me coz i cant get into my house properly.... anyways on another note, they handle alright less body roll, i was smashing it around bends and straight and i rears wanted to give but they didnt lol but i was runnin steelies haha.... i might run 215/40/17 on the rear and 215/45 on the fronts.

I just threw mine away and went back to halogens as that cheap taiwanese junk I bought from ebay finally conked out. Not worth the money. Every person I've ever talked to has had the same problem. Eventually my actual bulbs/harnesses died out too.

Its Small Lights (exterior) according to the manual, which i think is front parkers and the
lights on the trunk besides the reversing one.

*note i have a pair of LED License plate bulbs, and Eagle Eye headlights.

Have you changed either of them recently?

Try with some normal licence plate bulbs. If it keeps blowing then try the angel rings.

My guess is the angel eyes though.

Yepz. All the oldies but goldies (stig, aero, ej20i, murrayfd, jace, curtis) etc have parted out and $$old up.

Unfortunately, the flame burnt out long, long ago. No one left willing to carry the baton. Even still, it's all been covered already.

This thread is now perhaps just a lost cause.

would love 2 go to the Nationals and fling the FD1 around Wakefield but a trip to the NT is booked, will be running at the track a few days later with my new brake set up (slotted DBA 4000 and QFM pads ). Good to have a choice with some good Aussie made perf parts.
