Noob question for the stance gurus.

Herego:

If I want a 1" wheel gap reduction, is it as simple as lowering the car by 1" with springs?

black8thgen
27-10-2012, 07:51 PM
I'm sure it would depend on the type of spring? Some brands will be stiffer etc and when they claim a 2" it could result in something far different. Best bet - get some good coils and adjust it/play with it as the springs settle etc. Takes more time but you get the bonus of better handling and constant adjustability? I forgot whether or not you have coils yet lol. Are you still on stock sussy?

xenonkuraz

yeah probably the only thing thats still stock is my suspension :/

however I don't want to get coils

Herego:

If I want a 1" wheel gap reduction, is it as simple as lowering the car by 1" with springs?

It usually is, but your wheel setup is pretty aggressive. So with that 1" drop, you can expect a bit more of a drop as natural camber will set in and get you a bit lower. However, with that being said, when I was on springs, my rear was lower than my front due to the camber, so that's another thing to watch out for.

curtis265
28-10-2012, 10:54 AM
yeah probably the only thing thats still stock is my suspension :/

however I don't want to get coils

For what reason?

If you're not after shit coils go for some decent shocks (suitable for the street) and a good springrate to match. Think koni yellows + a decent spring of whatever brand you like.

coils are just for the sake of saying you're JDM. And if you insist on having height adjustability, you can get those ground control or skunk2 sleeves

xenonkuraz
28-10-2012, 07:11 PM
Because I insist on this car being a daily and if I have height adjustable coil overs I know I will end up slamming the bitch.

So yes I wouldn't mind getting koni yellows and say king springs but I'm trying to keep it simple at this stage as I'm currently putting the pot towards more performance mods; Apexi avcr/eboost2, battery relocation kit so I can extend my intake pipe length, rrc manifold and bigger throttle body to name a few.

Nuespeend sport springs (German $330 landed) and Tokico HTS ($790 landed) did all the installing myself. Was a tight decision as Koni shocks are a great option. Again each to their own but I havent seen too many sets of coilovers for $1100 Id touch ! I also tried Eibach spkrtline springs but found the rear spring rate to be too light for my style of driving.

black8thgen
29-10-2012, 03:51 PM
they are 18x9 - that i am sure of. However, the offset i'm not sure. But i would guess it would be somewhere between 35-50. That's just going by the concavity of the face

lolmclol
29-10-2012, 03:59 PM
was going to say +9 .. but when I saw the huge amount of camber it sort of threw off my answer, I can't find any real lead to the specs.

the offset I'd say +35 .. as its the highest it would go without any problems.

29-10-2012, 04:03 PM
this is the link to the canibeat feature:

http://www.canibeat.com/2010/08/the-power-of-dreams/

yeah probably 35 considering the amount of camber - and the massive gap up front between tyre and fender is probably because he installed genuine fd2r fenders (which have more clearance than stock fd).

hey man noob question here. I'm looking for better handling and lowering my car (probably to minimum legal height - 10cm). I'm looking at Tanabe NF+ coils at the moment. Would the Koni/Ground control be better in terms of value for money for a daily civic? Not planning to track the car at all. Thanks.

The only thing Steve lacks with his setup is adjustability. If you wanna dump the car then coilovers are what you want. stance = coils only because when you're running close to flush then you don't want much movement and with coils you can tighten them up to that degree.

If you're looking for performance and getting a bit lower then fun with the Koni/XXXXXX spring option. Neither are a bad choice.

i had the tanabe NF+ --> spring rates are way too soft if you're planning on going for a stanced look - you will bottom out and scrape and rub and all this retarded shit on these coils lol.

in terms of daily driveability, how low you can go, and comfort - they're quite good and cheap-ish too. I never hit the track myself but my mate who had the same coils on an fd did and said they were decent. But i suspect the rates are too soft for any decent track work

yes, quite easily. I think the koni + gc is around $1.1k

i'm guessing the tanabes cost a fair bit more? (got NFI)

spring rates can always be changed, especially with the ground control sleeves

black8thgen
29-10-2012, 04:46 PM
tanabe are around 1.5 i believe. Yes spring rates can be changed but another limitation is that the NF+ don't have damper adjustability. Just height.

So what you guys are saying is, the koni/gc is much better value, but if I want to go for the stanced look and avoid scrubbing everywhere, I'm going to need coils with a higher spring rate?

black8thgen
29-10-2012, 05:23 PM
For street use, koni/gc is sufficient and cost-effective. If you are looking to go down the coil route, invest in something with good adjustability and choose a good spring rate.

Have you got a set of rims in mind or already put on at the moment?

Can someone please confirm if the koni/gc setup will be able to lower my car to the ride height that I'm after (ie. 10cm off ground)?

Nah haven't gotten wheels yet, still saving and looking. Probably get a set shortly after I lower. Love to have a set of Used silver BBS LMs or SSR Type Fs (like that red CTR a page back). Haven't decided yet if I should go for 17x9 or 18x9 though. Not sure how bad the ride will be xD

Btw do you have any recommendations for coilovers? I've read that TEIN SS or Buddyclub N+ are good ones for the FD.

Buddyclub N+ ride very nicely and will certainly get you as low as you want. And have reasonable spring rates with height and damper adjustability.

I personally am trying to go the other way. The TypeR is WAAAYYY to hard for daily driving factory. So they are the track suspension and I am looking for some smooth and slightly lower daily suspension.

The guys on the US forum (8thcivic) have nothing negative to say about the Buddyclubs, but I've read a few more "enthusiast" comments say there is better that can be bought in the same price bracket.

But if and when I do buy coilovers, they'll definitely be a set of Buddyclubs :-P

Claim its a safety device, you're utilising the extra vibrations and sound to warn people who are hard of hearing also possibly with depreciating eye sight that you're coming as you wish not to add them as a hood ornament.

Because you care, its got nothing to do with being an auto enthusiast ;-).

Anyone know if fn2r seats are straight bolt on to our cars, including their rails? Or are modifications needed?

Sorry man I got your PM about this, I've just answered this same question a few times now.

The FN2r seats come with rails and 4 feet per seat that bolt onto the floor.

The rails are fine, however the feet won't match up to the FD chassis. So you need to grind the rivets off the feet of the FN seats and replace them with the feet off your existing FD seats. Or you can fabricate them up.

Other than that everything will plug in fine etc.

Pretty hard to get dish on an FD2R.

Factory wheel is a 18x7.5 +60
Those are 18x9 +40 (if memory serves)

So effectively the lip of the rim on those sit ~39mm further out than factory and requires 3° of camber in the rear.

Areis
12-11-2012, 02:29 PM
oh ok.. thats weird o.O never knew the factory offset was +60

guess standard FDs are made to be stanced compared to the FD2R... Although i thought FD2R had bigger guards.. Really confused atm lol.

longer LCA and more protruding hubs to accommodate brembos would be my guess

BaNaNaMaN
13-11-2012, 10:26 AM
The reason the FD2R has such high offset is to improve handling.
With high offset you gain a negative scrub radius which in turn decreases torque steer and improves stability.
S2000 is also another honda that has a +60 offset from factory.

The authentic mugen one is ABS .. the only issue is then is if you get a replica type r front bumper how well will it fit, I've seen photos on the malaysian civic forum where they have one which fits the face lifted front end (definitely a replica).

The authentic one could end up costing you about all up $900.

2011 Vti, 77,000km, 10 track days, 3 set of tyres (got R888 for the track now), onto my 4th set of brake pads, 3rd set of rotors to go on over summer, 14 oil changes.....thank god this a work car !! lol

Picked up a an old Racetech RT4000 to slip in for trackdays, none of this comfy Recaro shit.

If people are keen to do it let's cut shipping down and order a bulk lot.

yeah the thai one - group buy would be hugely advantageous in terms of shipping costs haha..

the BIGGEST and probably only problem with buying from these guys is they speak next to no english.. so it can get frustrating (also relatively slow replies). Hopefully for everyone's sake they've had some english practise over the past couple years and are now ready to converse in unbroken english

Import duties are imposed on shipments over $1000AUD.

Only way around it was would be split shipments and possibly dodgy invoice amounts to avoid duties.

Still is a thought.
