Is it 80 or 100k? Both major services for different reasons.

80k - valve clearance adjustment, oil, filter, air cleaner, etc.

100k - timing belt, probably auto tensioner (they tend to crap out by then), plugs, oil, filter, etc.

I wouldn't even dare imagining how much it would cost to do all that at Honda.

Timing Belt $70
Engine Oil $30 HOnda FEO
Oil Filter $15
Air Filter $unsure
Fuel Filter $40
Spark Plugs $4 each or $20 depending on what you want
Coolant $40 ish
Transmission FLuid $25
Brake Pads $100ish for OEM, less for bendix
Brake Fluid $10

++ Paying someone to do it!
I think if you found a friend who's a mechanic they'd charge you about $100 for the timing belt the rest you can do yourself!

Hey guys, im in a similar situation. Have a 97 auto VTiR. Got quoted $1100 by Collins Honda in Rockdale for a 100k service. I got them to write down everything that they will be doing, and the list goes as follows:

Replace engine oil & oil filter
Replace auto transmission oil
Replace timing belt & balance belts
Replace tensioner
Replace spark plugs
Check & tune brakes
Check over rest of the vehicle

Im just curious as to what the hell a "tensioner" is and does it really need replacing???

jeremyweb

The tensioner is a little part that has a pulley conected to it,basically it creates and keeps tension on the timing belt etc.
Sorry if my definition isnt very good, see the pics below to understand it a bit better:

http://www.agthompsonfamily.com/vw/TensionerPulley5.jpg

It is very tedious to remove,it usually needs to be removed to put on a new belt anyway,i would not suggest doing it your self unless you know what your doing because it needs to be a specific tension.Good luck

Also your quote is more expensive because of the automatic transmission, which require a more extensive service than that of a manual transmission

Yeh recommend getting the timing belt tensioner as most of them leak. If they leak your timing belt can come loose. $1100 with tensioner is about right as the tensioner itself is like $300. Dont skimp on this service as my dealer ship always get calls from workshops asking us how to take the harmonic balancer pulley off whe doing the timing belt and its easy as for us as we do them day in day out.

They also use iridum plugs so if you can get iridums for $4 each 16CTEG I want to know where because I wouldnt mind stocking up on some even if I dont need them.

if your car is auto, it's better to replace it with manual tensioner rather than the auto one, coz the manual is better and stronger.

Hi

I work for honda in SA .
the 100 k service is just a minor service and cam and balancer belt . everyone who is telling you that you need a tensioner is spot on , 9 times out of ten the tensioner will bust when you try to relieve it .

The cam belt on a vtir prelude is one of the most dificult cam belts you would ever want to do on a 4 cyl honda so dont just let non honda trained techs do it unless they are a good mechanic ,,,

You are looking at around 3 to 4 hours of labour plus around 50 to 100 for the belt , and another 100 for the tensioner.

I wouldnt go away from the service scedule if i were you , you dont need to do tappet adjust or fluids or filters till 120,000km's , dont go away from the scedule , if you service it as per the book and use the genuine fluids it will run forever, dont let your dealer sell you shit you dont need !!!! like injector cleans and power steering flushes.

At our dealership it would cost you around about the $500 mark , but sydney dealers charge at least 40 to 60 an hour more than us
