I bought a 2nd hand '02 ITR and the owner has been using FEO for all of its ~60,000kms mileage. I want to change to a fully synthetic oil. Would it be fine to do so?

Use an oil flush something like Pyroil or Nulon
Comes in a 300ml bottle; pour it in and idle for 10 minutes then drain the oil

Then throw in the full synth oil; I would recommend that you change the oil again after 2,000km (without using an oil flush) and then do it as per normal

If you're in the area I have a handful of OEM oil filters fairly cheaply

^^ I don't agree with an oil flush. Just drain out the FEO and put in your 10w-30 fully synthetic oil.

Will it cost much to do an oil flush?

It's $10-$15 from Repco/Supercheap/Burson

when i first got my car the old owner used a sythetic fortified mineral oil but just when i came to service it i used a full ester synthetic 10-40. i didn't flush just instead every 5000ks i just used the same full ester synthetic and have had no troubles.

Don't flush...just change oil...it won't hurt...
If you're bothered, then just schedule the 2nd change a lot closer

Why not flush? Wont do any harm; nor is it exactly going to break the bank

Because I don't see the point in flushing, even if its cheap.

As for harm, I'm not comfortable introducing something into an engine which aim is to specifically remove sediments/sludge. One, obviously you dislodge stuff which could clog things up (thats in the worst case), two, to remove sludge, you need something the consistency of kerosene, which could be detrimental to the lubrication and three, most good oils already have detergent in them.

So for the above reasons, especially for 3, its just not worth the risk on 1 and 2.

I took my car to Hanny's for a service the first time, and the first owner used Honda FEO and I said I wanted to use synthetic. So all they did was drain the oil and put Mobil 1 straight in. No issues at all.

One time about 50k kms later, the rookie put in Honda FEO mineral without asking me what oil I use, so I said stuff it, I used that for 5k kms and then took it back for the next service and started using synthetic again. No issues whatsoever.

So to answer your original question: yes.

if you worried about the oils not mixing, take abit out and mix it with you new oil. If they mix then alittle leftover will not hurt. I just rem somewhere that there are some oils that don't mix so that's the only thing you gotta be carful of. Myself i did a flush on the car as i was not the first owner, then just amde sure that i serviced every 5,000km + filter. car drives great.

flush is suppsoed to be for sludge build up caused by burn..all oils burn a certain degree, syns dont burn as much as your cheap and nasties, it might be cheap but wont do much, changing oil types (as long as they are all good qual) wont cause any bad effects unlike coolant. dont waste time of money. i worked at a mechanics for 2 years wen i was younger, only used flush on old old cars as in more then 15 years old. even that was rare.
