View Full Version : 350-400kms per tank???
Hey ive got a 2000 Civic auto CXi that only manages 350-400kms.. is that right or am i killing alot of fuel sumwhere? Ive got basic Intake, exhausts and extractors.. is my air/fuel ratio out of wack or sumtin? whats everyone else getting. Should i get sumtin like the SAFC to help me out?
Thanks

COULD be a bad o2 sensor or blown catylic convertor....resulting in the [acronym:f38d6e4c4c="Engine Control Unit"]ECU[/acronym:f38d6e4c4c] running the computer rich - using more fuel obviously.
OR could be a clogged air filter....OR bad fuel filter.....or even bad spark plugs.
"something like" a SAFC wont help - the problem lies in a sensor somewhere - check/replace each thing plus more I have described in this thread - if still using a high-amount of fuel take it to a mechanic and get your [acronym:f38d6e4c4c="Engine Control Unit"]ECU[/acronym:f38d6e4c4c] code-tested. IMHO , i think its because of the addition of aftermarket header + CAI + etc , which has put the [acronym:f38d6e4c4c="Engine Control Unit"]ECU[/acronym:f38d6e4c4c] off balance and it is just simply running rich to compensate for the larger sizes of piping etc.
Come back here when finished and tell us what happened :)
Yeah but first of all am i actually losing fuel? How many kms should i be getting?

your petrol consumption sounds good to me.
I get 300km to a 64 litre tank city driving if im lucky.
I get 700-800km per tank on the freeway on long trips.

not losing fuel as in its leaking out of your tank.
just excess fuel going through the pistons and not actually burning, and getting blown out your exhaust. get someone to rev your car (when its warm) and just put your hand in front of the exhaust and then smell your hand... if its running rich, then you will basically only smell fuel.

I get on average 550 - 600km out of one tank (40litres) with mixed highway and city driving.
Yeah but first of all am i actually losing fuel? How many kms should i be getting?
That's really hard to answer, cause different driving conditions get you different fuel milage. Drive on a freeway without stopping or starting will give you great fuel milage, but normal city "peak hour" style will get you crap milage, due to the stopping and starting. 350-400 is quite acceptable i reckon... Also the way you drive has an affect... try driving without a heavy foot "take off slowly" and also try keep it in the highest gear possible, quite hard when the car has no torque though.. i know :)
What car you driving Rowie? Yeah i knew i wasnt actually losing fuel.. just losing fuel as in how much is going to waste... haha.. dam if i was leaking fuel i wouldnt be on here chatting.. i'll be in burns unit.. Thanks for the replies...

my honda is a ED civic hatchback with the D15B
Thansk Rowie... thats almost double my consumption... ive just read in RACQ and NRMA car reviews that the cxi on average consumes 7.1L/100km stock... so with a 40 L tank i should be getting around 500 km am i right? so looks like i am running abit rich..
ATSE: I know its very hard to find the exact amount consumption but just wanted to know averages.. and it does seem that mwhat i normally get.. from 350-400 is a tad bit low to civic standards.. Remember that its not a sports car... But your right bout the torque thing... u got to give it lots to get it going.. especially on hills.. it just feels like the engine is working so hard yet its going absolutely nowhere! hehe..

Your auto will also chew through a bit and if you use the A/C, that too will increase fuel consumtion

your definitly running rich, unless you have your foot to the floor all the time. And the CXi is pretty gutless, so maybe your expecting too much?
You basically need to do what ben said :
COULD be a bad o2 sensor or blown catylic convertor....resulting in the [acronym:06f22abd14="Engine Control Unit"]ECU[/acronym:06f22abd14] running the computer rich - using more fuel obviously.

yeah thats what i get usually.
went on a honda cruise yesterday with some pretty quick hill drivin and i got 650ks till the fuel light came on. then i filled up
i got an eg5 Si with cat-back, intake and mags nothing too flash.
u should be gettin better than 500.... i think :?
Right right.. thanks guys.. Looks like i know what the problem is.. Running RICH!.. the hard part now is discovering why! hehe this should be fun.. NOT!

well...
i get 550-600 a tank and yeah mines running rich...as well
which was a O2 sensor fault and dizzt rebuilt that went wrong and sent the [acronym:8aecbf255e="Engine Control Unit"]ECU[/acronym:8aecbf255e] into crazy mode..lol

when i was running my jdm d15b i would get about 500-550 ks out of a full tank. to me it sounds like you're running way rich.
well by the sounds of it im not running rich... sounds like i got a huge problem!!!!! im like going half what you guys are saying... um.........

I've got a manual EK hatch and use Optimax and only get about 400km+ - not much over 400km with suburban dirving and a little freeway driving and don't really fang it that much...
have you got any mods to that Ek skoota?

i'm getting roughly around 600-630 from a stock EG vti...
pretty good i think, but i did notice it drop a lil when i had an air filter on there.
Thats very bad consumption. i get at minimum 240K to ~20l (always fill up $20 only) average around 270K per fillup. ANd im running a low 12 A/F Ratio on 11psi of boost. lol. BTW i only use BP Ultimate.

im running a GLi aswell and im getting just a bit over 400 per tank
same as my friend...he has a vtir and gets abouts the same as me
but remember..this is all suburban driving
Ok well i think ive come t the conclusion that Ek's do use abit more fuel then Egs... But a combination of my autmatic, city driving and accelleration (sice the car is so slow) means that my consumption is where it is. However it still is running abit rich but it seems like im not far off.. Looks like i'll have to slowly replace parts to find the problem. Im sure it does have to do with my mods but where is the o2 sensor and how can i check if its broken..
Grab a haynes manual, gives u all the info on how to checkout every sensor.

also look up the specs of your maximum torque figure with your revs, there is no point reving the car much past that to get fuel economy, as it will only guzzle more the higher you rev.

cheak your air cleaner and O2 sensor.
in my CRX B16a2, I get 470 to 520 kms to 45l fuel with nice driving ( well a little Vtec ) the light comes on at 430 Kms with City Driving

This might be a dumb question but can running a full aftermarket exhaust and replacement panel filter make a car run rich??
...... me thinks not but since the H/E got installed and moreso up until recently, (when timing belt got changed) the car seems to smell a little like unburnt fuel when I got it running and have to step out to get to the hatch or similar.
Or could there be another problem...... would it be worth getting a dyno run with the A/F reader attached to it? *only cause haven't had the car on a dyno since the exhaust was installed.

Nah I don't have any mods to speak of - stock as a rock besides the 17's but that don't matter - and it's a fricken GLi! But mind you it's like only a 35-40L tank isn't it? So 10km per L isn't that bad in what would be a majority or suburban driving?

that actually sounds right for an Auto civic, i got a manual GLi, and get about 400-450km with a bit of mixed driving, so 350-400km for an auto is about spot on. Nothing to worry about.

hey dude that mileage sounds about right
ive got an ek gli model and i usually get about 420k's out of a full tank of optimax, ive pushed it to 450k's but i think i was almost running on fumes at that time hehe
my only mods are a 2inch cat back exhaust, ive also got 18s on my car which makes the engine work harder to get the wheels moving

i drive an EG VTI auto as well
and your fuel consumption is just like mine so i assume its right
i have never driven till the fuel light comes on, the needle is like on E already
always fill up around 380 km and it takes ~38L
so 10L/100km for me
Thanks for all your replies guys! Most replies with the EK seem to be similar to me. All over models seem to be chewing less fuel... The Ek civic has a 45 L tank.. Well while we are on this topic... when the light comes on.. how many kms would i have left? or litres.

take a can of petrol one day and leave it in ur car, keep driving until your car stops and you'll know roughly how many km's u can get out of a full tank...
will depend on how and where u drive.
i wasn't aware that small mods like exhuast and air instake lower the km's so much... i swear i can get 600km's out of my vti manual.
ohh and my tank tanks around 45 litres by the book i think. but i've filled it to over 47 litres when it was truel empty

Ek has a fuel light? I have never got that far :( i feel so un-manly. I get to just below the red line then get nervous. The fuel gauge is so shit 1/2 of the tank can be used before the dial shows less then 100% full.
When the light comes on.. it means that you have less than 6.5L left. I usually get around 40km more when the light comes on...

I have heard runing your tank dry is not good for the injectors....can any boffins confirm this?

usually when the light goes on.. i drive for extra 20-30kms !! ahhaha.. first time i got really nervous but after then i felt safe knowing that even when light comes up, theres still 5-7L left in the tank!
my car is an ek civic vtir, the most i've gotten out of the tank was about 450km.. i got 430 - 450 km a coupla tanks in a row.. but now my economy has died in the ass and its back to 380ish... i think my filters etc are dirty or something :(

Not a boffin but yeah..... if there is shit at the bottom of the tank than it can screw up fuel lines.... it *shouldn't* make its way into the engine cause of fuel filter though having crap in your fuel lines I would imagine could hurt performance and prove costly to fix.......... fuel lines are quite pricey for what they are.

I just put in Redline's Si 1 injector cleaner. I find i am getting better fuel economy. Will let you guys know how this turns out in the next tank full. Car feels real smooth though.
Since we are on the fuel economy topic, anyone know how fuel catalysts work? Or how good are they?

also not a good idea to get air into your fuel lines, this most probably will lean your motor out too and bang rebuild, all because u were trying to be a tight ass and waiting for Tuesday to fill up.
also found if u use normal unleaded u get less mileage, so the price for PULP balances out as u get more kms out of the tank.

Yeah I run nothing but 98 RON in my EG Vti hatch...i think I am getting about 550-600 km per tank...but I never let her get below about 1/4 tank...so that is an approximation based on the fact I have about 300km on my trip meter when just below half full...and I DO tec a bit.... :D 8)
