View Full Version : Lowering noise issues - Clunk y0~!

So I relowered my car on the weekend again, using H&R Sports + Koni yellows on the lowest perch.
And its back. The sound: "clunk clunk" lol... usually on higher speed mini bumps where the spring compresses rapidly.
When the car was back on the higher perch, the H&Rs didn't have any noise. so its a strange thing.
Would it be possible that:
a) The spring is moving freely in the coilover assembly (unlikely)?
b) springs are clapping against each other creating a loud clunk (likely)?
c) the spring perch is moving on the shock (unlikely)?
d) rear shock is bottoming out with a 2" drop + OEM bumpstops in place (unlikely)?
e) sway bar endlink is hitting the shock body (like the Omni coilovers)?
f) other?
Its not the swaybar endlinks. its not the strut top mount being loose. hmm.. your advice is appreciated!

could be any of those things with it sitting on the lowest perch.

It seems you've already determined the solution. (I know, not very helpful, but seriously just raise it to where it was when it wasn't clunking, and progressively lower it until it clunks again, then go back to the next highest point where it wasn't clunking.)

Fine tuning is always an arduous task... if you guess what height to sit the lower perch at the first time, you won't need to disconnect/swing down the LCA again and it will just be a matter of rasing/lowering the spring seat. So after the first adjustment, the hardest part would be getting it up and down off stands...

if you make the ride stiffer does it still happen,
less or more?

When you lowered the springs to the lowest perch, did you loosen and retighten your endlinks? The endlinks have a different position at different heights. That's why you should loosen the nut so that the endlink position is suitable for the lower height.
Also, if you are at the lowest perch, the damper is not able to work as well as when it was raised.

yeah we did. because we had to undo the endlinks to get the suspension out

yeah it happened the first time we had it on the lowest, thas why i raiseed it back up. I have done countless hours of forum searching and most pinpoint it to the absence of spring wrap, especially on H&R sports due to its bare metal surface. so i'm going to try that first.
clunking only comes on when it compresses quickly. the spring is entraped quite well in the strut assembly. and the endlinks are fine. so are the top mounts. i ensured everything was tight.
this clunking is a very common problem in the states - ppl who have lowered their accords like me. so its just a matter of finding what it is. i can live with it. and it looks good so i dont really mind.
thanks dylanamus and aaron for your suggestions. appreciate it.

make sure the swaybar endlinks are 100% tight. Even a tiny bit loose , will have them making funny clicking and clunking noises from either side.
Best to have a size 4-5 ( i think?) allen key and a 14mm spanner to properly tighten them each.
Also can you see any fresh rubbing underneath anywhere near the shocks/springs/swaybar? look now !

thanks Ben,
The endlinks are fine. I believe it is the springs clapping. I havent gotten around to installing spring wrap yet, but everything is tight, I checked again by hand with my socket set.
Its probably a noise which I will have to live with. Its not painful, but rather knowing its there, and knowing there isnt really much I can do about it.
Thanks again for your suggestions.

so, Spring wrap solved the problem. Another problem is that the car now sits higher, because of it. so i'm going to take it off, and live with the clunking. it looks better ;)
