Hi I have an 02 CRV and had a warning indicator light came on, although I did not noticed anything wrong with the car, I went straight to a mechanic and he said that there was a problem with the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and needed to be replaced.

Apparently the whole Throttle Body needs to be replaced at a cost of around $1100.

I thought this was a bit strange given you can't notice anything wrong with the car when driving it so I looked on the net for some info.

The TPS appears to be a fairly common problem in the US with honda issuing a service bulletin on it, saying it was due to a manufacturing defect.

From what I have read a TPS shouldn't go faulty, especially in a car that has done 90,000klm and from what I read most people over there having been getting it fixed under goodwill from honda if they are regular customers.

I also found some posts where they say the TPS fault is often misdiagnosed and is just an electrical/connector problem which I think could be the case as our car seems fine.

Just wondering if anyone here has had a similar problem and has any advice on whether I should cough up the $1100 or try a different approach?

Yes it is mostly likely your TPS and for some stupid reason Honda dont sell it by itself. I guess they dont trust people to set it up properly. Go to your local dealer and see if the can put a PWR in to Honda Aus to see if they will assist.

I've heard of Honda honoring poor design and/or manufacture on other models, again in the US, but not here. It fair-dinkum sheeets me that for the same problem the difference is $1,100 for the buyer. I've been on the end of it with Land Rover but I thought Honda were better than this.

The TPS gives a voltage or current based on a coil and magnet position. It's not an expensive part, so why should you have to buy a throttle body!

A few simple question that you should ask just to hear the answer....."Is it expected that the TPS dies inside of 100K? Is there something wrong with my maintenance of the car that this has happened? It's not reasonable that I buy a second throttle body. Is this an error of design or manufacture by Honda. Is there a technical bulletin that was issued prior to my car coming out of warranty"?

May not get you what you want but it's better than getting their shrug of the shoulders.

Ours did the same thing, 3 weeks after purchase. Honda actually replced the item free of change (not including labour - $100) as we have our car serviced by them.
