View Full Version : chip or computer?
i have a 92 civic eg8 sedan.
i was wondering wether to get a chip or a new computer to gain some power.
i was told that i would use more fuel for just a little power gain.
opinions?

If you're not complicating the existing computer with abnormal tuning circumstances like adding a turbo or changing the compression, then a chip is more than enough and the extra expense of a standalone ECU would be a bit of a waste really.

No point gettin aftermarket ecu if you havent got some major engine work done..
Id focus more on the intake, headers and exhaust....that or save for an engine conversion of some sort...or FI :)

Q_ball I disagree somewhat with your first point. Modifying your ECU with a programmable chip allows a tuner the freedom to dyno tune the existing setup (whatever that may be) to get the most out of it.
If you only want a tiny bit more power than stock, but are after a smoother power band or want to tune power and torque to suit certain types of driving, then I would personally rather do that then start modifying internals.
If your goal is to achieve the most amount of power possible, then an ECU as your first mod is a waste. That said, here is where I agree with Q_Ball, at least smooth out some of the other restrictions on the engine first, like exhaust and intake etc...

I still dont see a point in spending any money on the ecu unless you really have to as the gains will be so minimal you'd think - fck i wish i had bought a plate of fried rice instead!
All it would do is make the car run smoother, more responsive - power wise, dont expect much.
Keep in mind its a puny 1.5L, even modifying the intake, headers and/or exhaust - gains would be minimal.
Not worth it.
