View Full Version : Over revved - arrrghhhh

The beauty and the fun of Euro is by getting i-VTEC engine singing, but unfortunately for me I sometimes over-rev the engine when accelerating. The engine cut off is 7,200rpm according to what I've seen, but I feel doing over revving many times will cause the engine to wear quicker. Am I correct? This would also consume more fuel. I think I have to cut it out, trying not to over rev again...when accelerating hard I am trying to always keep my shift gear change at 7000rpm. Is anyone of you have over revved your Euro?

don't over revved too many times.
the engine won't only weaken, but it will cost your cams, retainers, piston rings etc. big time!

There was an S15 came to my workplace with a blown head due to over revved. Cost too much, both time and money.

I always thought the cut off is at 7,300? at least that's what was usually shown on my vafc2 when I hit the rev limiter :(

Like what claymore said, you can't overrev unless you misshifted and went into 2nd instead of 4th and brought your RPM to over 7300rpm. Don't worry. Hitting the limiter at 7300rpm is only slightly worse than going at 7000rpm.

if u use a computer which has a rev limit , u got nothing to worry about ,it is not called over rev, i have heard people revved to 10000 something when the rev limit was removed , blew the motor hehe

I've hit the rev limited heaps of times. I know I shouldn't though, just gets to redline so fast esp through the VTEC range. I too now try to change at 7000rpm which in an auto means actually pushing up on the stick at about 6300 as it takes that long to actually engage the next gear.

When the VTEC kicks at 5800rpm, the rpm needle went so fast to the redline. As it went so fast I try to shift gear at 7000rpm maximum or below if possible. Thanks for tips claymore, Aaron :)

Euro VTEC engagement point is 6050RPM and cut-out is 7400RPM..

Yup..... euro's vtec engage after 6k RPM....

Not sure if its 6050 or 6200 RPM.

If you rev it till fuel cut, you loose power and get overtaken :p, better upshift when it hits 7k RPM.

I never feel or hear any vtec kick in on my euro...... it definately does not pick up faster even if i put the foot down....... only thing i feel is roughness when it reach 4krpm and above......

I can definitely feel the surge at 6000-7000rpm. The dyno charts can prove it too.

Yeah it's the best thing, but within that range it's pity that the i-VTEC was singing too short, suppose to be longer like the older Civic VTi-R for example, or Type R could be better too ;)

6000-7300rpm is optimum for stock Euros. But if you get I/H/E and retune the ECU for 98 RON petrol then the ideal range for highcam starts at about 5000-5500rpm instead. :)

sorry to hijack this thread but i think theres somethign wrong with my VTEC in my euro.. above 5000rpm you can definately feel something happening like vtec coming on... but acceleration slows down instead of speeding up... i dont know what it is..?? the only mod i have is K&N CAI...

Learn to shift properly. Just practice shifting at the right point. Its not that hard. Its a euro not a mines r34.

Are you doing that in the rain or in the wet? Probably your tyres losing grip and the traction control cutting power. Unless you are breaking the speed limit.

Yeah there is a flatspot up there. I've felt it in all the euro's i've driven.

It could be the vtec crossover...

could be the flat spot or could it be cos ive only got intake and no headers/exhaust and not tuned?

yea might possibly be cos its been really we here lately in melb... i'll try it again when it dries up... this is happening in 2nd gear by the way

The intake doesn't cause the problem, but it does make it more dramatic; the red graph is stock, blue graph is with the cai.
Every stock dohc vtec honda graph i've seen has had some sort of flat spot or dip at the crossover point, it's a quirk of the factory programming. A good tuner with an aftermarket ecu/piggyback and a little dyno time should be able to fix it.

If vsa is cutting in, you'll see the very obvious warning light flashing on and off- it's pretty hard to miss.

You dont need to see the traction lights to know you are loosing traction... the feel of the car is good enough.

I get back into Melb on Friday. Will be fun with my stock tyres and no traction. LOL

I'm a little baffled as to why you'd add that snippet of information; are you replying to me, or adding some trivia to the conversation.
