Should I be worried about buying a high kms Lude?

The one we're looking at is a 1988 4ws Lude with 200,000km on the clock.

prolly..

you might need to rebuild the engine..
and also the transmission it it's an auto..

For more info on 3th gen just join the www.preludeaustralia.com
there is a specific 3th gen section and you can ask there :)

your looking at nearly a 20year old car with 200,000ks... its less than average for its age but none the less its got 200,000kms - maintenance may become a problem (check if major service was done) and selling will definantly be a problem! but if u like the car and its been well maintained and its cheap get it
Thats all the advice i can give you comming from a civic owner =)

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback.

The kms is a bit of a worry. I'm not sure what engine it is and how durable they are. The lude is a good car and would suit the driving... mainly country driving.

Okay, so there's nothing specific to old Preludes which might ring alarm bells?

Cheers.

If the car has been regularly serviced, it should be able to last into the 400000 mark without needing a rebuild...
The only things that should be going wrong with a regularly serviced Prelude would be hoses and fittings deteriorating, timing belts going, and *maybe* gearbox issues....
Yes its a 20 year old car, but one that is well kept can last another 20 years with good care.
Although I would stay away from buying a Prelude with 200000 kms without any service records - could be a lemon!
Just my advice!

well firstly the ks isnt TO bad, i bought mine with 280xxx on it, the only prob is the fws, the case thinggys (forgot name) Seem to give out fairly fast, i would scrap that idea and go and get either a late gen2 86 early 87si version if you like the older shape, or the newer ones with no 4ws, apparently the 4ws are a bitch...

To put it simply, Preludes are nothing like old Civics... So many things to go wrong... God damn it... F*CK!

i owned 2 3rd gen preludes and each had about 280 000kms when i sold them and they were great, just make sure the services have been done and u should be ok,. the engines last for about 300 000- 350 000kms before they may need a rebuild.

the engine wont give you trouble with that milage on it but the rest of the car will.

^^ agreed

leaks from doors, windows, boots, suspension could b gone, probably developed creaks, cracks, mb a bit of rusting,

just keep in mind the engines not the only thing u need to worry about

as long it was serviced regularly engine will not stuff up until the end of the car life .. ie i knoe a friend of mine had a honda civic that has done 300.000 kms and still goes okay. for daily drive

Yeah I had the same mentality "My Civic was fine..." :thumbdwn:

Though I know where you're coming from...

I brought my 1992 Lude with 273,000kms on it... and have had a few non engine problems... eg speedo sensor is going.. so the speedo is incorrect... the car has a lot of rattling noises.. and other little issues with the body.... but i have paid next to nothing for engine repairs.. except the new clutch which i did last month after 2 years of driving it, and learning manual in it.

The only issue i have now is selling it.. i'm going to get crap all for it...

but other than that... it shouldn't be a problem buying!
