Hey guys lets say i have a cat back and get after market custom headers will all this be semi pointless if the stock cat is still in place?

I would not say pointless, but it is the last piece of the puzzle so to speak.

Basically, you've done everything else for the airflow, for the sake of the extra 200 odd bucks, there is no reason not to do the cat!

yeah i will be doing the cat but its not so restrictive i wont feel or get a gain?

Kiz_EG6
24-07-2007, 06:56 PM
Yeah man, i would say you will get another gain from it.
As i said it is now the weak link in the chain, so yeah you will get a far betta pick up if you do the cat!

What difference is there between the standard, HF cat and a straight pipe?

Getting headers and HF cat from Adrian next week and wanted to know the advantages on track for the straight pipe.

A hi flow cat will still restrict the airflow to an extent (just not as much as a stock cat), as it still has to do it's job as a catalyst for exhaust fumes, whereas with a stright through piece of pipe you have no restriction at all!

Unless you plan on driving the car hard all the time a Hiflow Cat. won't do much.

What do you mean all the time?!
ANY time you drive the car hard you will feel the difference that a hi flow cat gives, why would it make any difference whether you drive it hard all the time or some of the time man?

Thanks for that. I'm gonna get the straight pipe too for the track. I'm curious though. How many people here run straight pipes all the time?

no ones gonna admit, because it's illegal.

Obviously wouldn't expect guys who have their rego on display here to, but I think the police have more pressing issues than surfing forums to see who hasn't got a cat fitted to their car.

It's numbers more than anything. 10%-20%???

There's obviously risks involved with anything. I'm pretty sure guys on here have other mods they've listed which aren't entirely street legal. If we wanna be pedantic about it all, pretty much every aftermarket exhaust for DC2s and DC5s breaches RTA guidelelines for noise pollution.

it's not noise pollution, it's ****ing up the world pollution.
lol.
running no cat, jail time.
or something like a 10k fine or something
lol.
different story aye?

a normal exhaust you get dicked a couple hundred bucks, and you get it cleared.
running no cat, can equal the above.
lol.

If you really think having no cat will make a difference worthy of spending more money, buy a testpipe of the same length, so you can interchange it with the cat when you go to events where street laws don't apply.

I call my exhaust "straight through", but not because it doesn't have a cat - I have a Metal Cat fitted - but because the pipe has very few bends and is the same diameter the whole way (including the tip) and doesn't have a muffler. The exhaust I have has an optional muffler insert (which I ALWAYS use on the street). I noticed a decent increase in torque and a bit better throttle response over a stock system.

Just get a metal cat, it flows more then enough for your NA setup and its LEGAL.

So no need to keep changing it back and forward between track days.

what some people have done.
is get a straight pipe, and get the stock cat, cut it, and put over the pipe.

Interesting viewpoint. You bought into the scaremongering of mates who once caught a fish |___________________this big____________________|. Best to get facts rather than speculating.

I didn't need a lecture. lol :p

Nice tip on getting around the cat issue BTW.

the cat does make a huge difference
when i was installing my system, i put on the headrs and the catback, but left the cat stock, and was pretty disappontied with the gains, then changed the cat and there was a huge difference in performance and sound
this was due to the fact that the stock cat was blocked when u looked down one side and all melted when u look down the other side

It made a noticable diff. because your stock cat. is totally dead.
