i think a voting critique guideline should be included.

Possible suggestion brought up by Rowie:

What is we were to put together a band of 10 or 20 judges for the next photocomp, instead of having every tom dick and harry voting?

i think a panel of moderators who openly have a disucssion that is opena nd publicly displayed to the forum members as judge would be good. or u know what? even better, the ppl donating the goods as prizess should vote?

Have a shortlist picked by a judge panel or something...like the 20 best out of all submitted before the forumers vote, to weed out the very average pics that still make it up there

The problem with that is the given the large quantity of images submitted, it will be hard to comment/justify all decissions.

This is sounding good to me......

it should be pics of anything landscape or other cars in general ...?

I think we should keep the subject matter as a Honda. This is Ozhonda after all.

Next, as suggested above, have a panel of judges select the best 10 photos (20 is too much) and then judge which one is best. It should be open for 1 week where the judges vote and submit comments for each photo to back up (justify) why they rated the photo what they did. They should give detailed notes on what makes the photo good and what its weaknesses are.

That is what a real photocomp should be like. It makes it harder to win and makes the prizes much more deserved.

*i still think my little 8 year old cousin has a chance here judging by our last comp... :P

I think it should be Honda in nature, or something like that instead of all these nice Honda's in city back drops and stuff like that, then hopefully you will get ppl planning shots, and thinking bout it a bit more. Being creative is one of the biggest things bout photography not just being in the right spot at the right time!

The panel of judges is much better, and maybe gift vouchers instead of prizes then ppl can chose what they want instead of stuff they may not want and no chopping for sure!

just my thoughts.....

I think the short-listed idea is a much better proposal.

Look we all know that this is just a bit of fun at the end of the day and that we are not blessed with professional photographers to assist with culling, voting, etc. We are fortunate enough though to have some people that are quite talented and obviously know enough about photography to provide constructive criticism to those less experienced.

Whilst this is a Honda forum, perhaps it might be nice to have some variation for one comp and do a scenery or something. Whether that becomes too difficult for the average people to distinguish the difference between a good shot and a great shot I don't know, but something different might be good.

I guess at the end of the day, if you are not happy with the conditions of entry, then just don't enter. It will save everyone a lot of grief and complaints.

if you have a shortlist picked by a judge panel.... there are many factors to be considered, are the same judges going to judge the pictures which have been placed into the final draw....? are the judges all knowledgable to the same degree/level of photography technique etc...? are the judges bias in any way towards a particular member/photo/camera/style?... do you take into consideration those who do not have top level equipment?....

i think a panel voting the top ten would be good.

then members would vote which foto should win. either by only being able to vote for one foto of the ten, or perhaps having to number them 1st 2nd to 10th place. just like the state elections etc kekeke

that way, it cant be rigged - as in voting the foto u want to win a 10, and every other foto 1, bringing all the average scores down.

umm that's why you have a PANEL of judges and not just one.

better composition doesn't come with better cameras :!:
All submitted photos are to be in the old 1024x768 anyway, so it doesn't matter if you have 4 mpx or 12 billion. You're still going to need to scale it down.

A photo that is in focus will be in focus regardless if you have a $2 camera or a $5k one.

Look @ McChook's photos compared to say Joneblaze.
a $2k camera vs a $300 one.

It's the person behind the camera, not the camera

yeh but vti-2 was saying, with all shutter settings etc... the cheaper cameras you cant adjust it?.... someone using a stand as opposed to someone not using a stand?....

toE
21-07-2004, 03:27 PM
a non-adjustable camera can do a pretty good job considering you understand the factors in taking a nice photo, with lighting and knowledge of your camera capabilities.

as Ed says...It's the person behind the camera, not the camera

Agree with the last comments but i maintain that the camera also plays a huge role. The lens also affects the quality of the photo so a cheap ass $100 digi cam can never compete with a $1k plus camera regardless of how good the photographer is. Cause under more difficult conditions like night shots or whatever else you have, the cheap camera will not be able to compensate for light conditions. You won't be able to adjust aperture, shutter speed, set custom white balance etc etc. Anyway, i'll step off the rant box now. ;)

Its the photographer that makes the difference. Most of my day time shots are taken on auto or P mode so I don't see what some people are complaiing about.

Don't blame the camera, blame yourself!

if your camera doesnt have manual settings then dont enter phtotos taken at nite. simple as dat.

but i do agree that if u want to take nite shots...it will be difficult. :)

so why do professional photographers use 5k slr cameras or whatever, as opposed to a $100 camera?.... im pretty sure there is a difference, but if you insist that its the photographer and not the camera, then i rest my case.

No. Upto a point it makes a difference........ What I am trying to say is that even with my ~$500 digi cam I can safely say that me as a photographer is the limiting factor and not the camera........so you can simply use the excuse that "he has a better camera than me" as to why photos aren't as good. Heck some people don't even have cameras so is that totally unfair?

A good workman never blames his tools.

A'PEXi
22-07-2004, 11:50 AM
yeh, well i have a similar value camera to you, so i'm not really complaining, im just making a point that to a degree, it is unfair if people who ARE using better camera's and they are therefore advantaged....

wynode
22-07-2004, 03:05 PM
Upto a point yes, but we can go on about this forever. I've had one of my pics published in a photomag and it has done better than pictures some people have take with digital SLRs.........so yes, the photographer has a lot to do with it yes........more so than the camera. Most modern day cameras take good pics on the auto mode. its mainly when it comes to night pics that you need to adjust the shutter.

Ok now lets keep it related to photocomp 3 thanks. :)

Could WE please be reminded why we started this photocomp ? (i know it's not about the prizes) 8) maybe prizes should be kept a secret till submission period finishes. im for the panel of judges, whether it be the sponsors, or a knowlegeable, select artsy bunch.
or maybe have two types of judging...People's choice winner, & a panel of judges winner. OR, a combined people's votes & judges votes.....

maybe a sub category for night shots with a minimum total entry....
i dunno...... :?
