when the cam timing is advanced, the power curve shifts to the lefton the dyno graph...this means the engine is making more power earlier. sometime peak power stays the same, sometimes it increases, sometimes it falls...

when u retard the cam timing, the power curve will shift to the right on the dyno graph...so that means the engine is making more power later in the rev range...

whenever ur changing cam timing the piston-to-valve clearance changes...
eg. when u advance the cam timing in a sohc the intake valves 'piston to valve' clearance decreases...whilst the exhaust valve's 'piston to valve' clearance increases...

and when retarding the timing...it works the other way around...
so u gotta take this into consideration specially if ur using high lift cams or hi comp pistons...cos the clearance may be limited...

i suggest make 2 degree changes at a time and see where ur happy...

do you know what the limit is for stock engine though? don't want valves hitting the pistons!

Just following on from this thread...

Here's a pic of my cam gear.I also have a stage 1 bisi cam.

Question is: How do I set intake lobe center-line to 110 degrees?

Thank U.

Unless you have accurate lift @ tdc figures,
You'll need to use a degree wheel.
In both instances, you need a tdc gauge & additional dial indicator to read the valve.
Did you get a cam card with your camshaft?

Thanks Adrian.

I didn't get a cam card with the camshaft.

That setting above was recommended to me by Justin at bisi.

My power band is too high,I want to move it down.

How dangerous would it to advance it 2 deg. at a time or 1 deg. like Christian said above?

The only change inside the engine is the stage 1 cam and cam gear..

I'm gonna put in on the dyno to dial in next tuesday $185 p/hr,he said 1hr should be enough.

Gotta set the timing after each adjustment..

I like how the power band is up high but I want it down lower to make the car more responsive, i.e. get to 100km/h quicker.

Hope I don't lose too much of that fun is has up higher...

I think a bit more down lower would suit your car perfectly Brett. I can't imagine there being too much of a loss with a bit less up top.

Yeah.I just fixed up my intake, got rid of all that piping.Car is better down low forsure, shoulda done it before..

I also just went to the hardware and bought some goodies.Gonna make an intake arm.Get rid of the bendy arm thats in there and have a straight one made from PVC piping.

I'll get some picky's!

Done and done, bit over an hour $220.

I will take apic of the dyno graph and post it.

But I picked up some low/mid end power, which is what I wanted to get it off the line quicker being an auto and didn't lose any high end at all.

The graph explains it.

It was retarded 1 deg,now it is advanced 4 or so (I will check)

Ya gotta do this on the dyno and pay the money unless U can use a degree wheel.

Nice! More down low with no loss up top?! That's awesome, you must be stoked cause I am!

Come take me for another ride weeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

Also meant to say that sounds like reasonable value too :)

haha, yeah, gotta give it a proper test yet..

It's 7 deg. advanced and I made 66.3kw :)

Sounds funny cause I made 69kw on another dyno 5yrs ago when all I had done was intake and exhaust lol

But that figure I couldn't give a rats ass about cause she's got all the power I want!

Beez! :)

See, it's not so scary :p
Good result

Is that kW result at the wheels or flywheel? Wheels right?

Kw at the wheel mate but it's BS,car has way more power than 5 yrs ago lol hehehe

Thanks Adrian,I'm very happy! Car is so much better, wicked!

It's not 100% though...I would say 80%,there's still room for improvement...but that's better than what it was.The tuner says my car would benefit from a SAFC cause it's running rich. Not keen to spend more money on that but.

All runs on each adjustment came within 0.5hp and he acted quite impressed,so that got me stoked cause I always wanted smooth/consistent..

I think the timing is at stock so I might advance it 2-4 deg, like it was and see if it's better again but that's all I can do.

Nah,car is Great guns now,had a mad drive the last 24hrs,gave it all my tests (covered 120km :) ) and I'm Very Happy.

I made up the other 20% easily and cheaply with a fuel mix:

1/2 a can of start ya bastard + 3-4 Mothballs.

Mothballs is an old V8 trick,it's 'Naptholene'.

Gives the car instant acceleration,so good!!

Make sure U spray the start ya bastard into fuel (jerry can) to mix it first.

Yep my car is definitely smoother power delivery now, especially down low!

Nice one!

And that was just 4 mothballs, start ya bastard gives it more of that good Lovin'! hehehe

beeza, are you saying you actually put mothballs into your petrol? lol

Got me a jerry can and some mothballs and start ya bastard can. Gonna do some mixing over the weekend and check out how it goes (i.e. how long it takes to dissolve etc).

Great stuff Troy!!!

Yup Will, just like Nan used to put in her draws to keep the moths out hahaha

The napthlene will evaporate in the fuel..so just use em' when ya wanna play.

And U should also use a upper cylinder lubricant because of the drier/hotter fuel temps that this will produce.

I just put a 50mm shot into the fuel every second time I fill up or so.

It coats the cylinder walls to help protect the metal casting.

Probably not necesary, more for using av gas but I can feel a small performance gain too..

Heat creates friction,friction requires lubrication.
