ok, got a noob question. can shop manuals be purchased from Honda dealers?

It depends on the brand and model. In the US, Haynes writes the manuals for Acuras, so they are highly detailed. But for other brands like Holden, they are "reverse engineered" from a donor car.

The amount of detail you need will depend on what you want to do really.

You can get the haynes books from repcos and some supercheap autos. With any luck if you go there there will be an open one for you to look at. Most of them come sealed.

ebay, its like $1 and u get it on CD if u dont wanna pay the $40 for the haynes one

Yeh, i hear some good and bad reviews on the haynes manuals... like mugeneration sed just hope u find an open one and have a flick through to see if it is relevant to you... gl with it
