View Full Version : Drving the engine in?

As im picking up my brand new CTR in afew days i was just curious wether or not i need to drive the engine in. I've heard from afew people that i should drive the engine abit before i begin to really drive the car hard/vtec it. Should i drive like a granny and for how long or just hit vtec as soon as i leave the dealership driveway!

people always say drive like a granny for 1k, but ffs, some ppl say not to.

Don't need to. Just make sure the engine is fully warmed up before you use heavy throttle and no launching and violent shifting.

This obviously makes the most sense.

Do you really want to drive anything fast when you cant be CERTAIN that it will even hold together? Let alone the fact that you havnt driven the car before and may handle differently?

Just take it easy for a while. Then flog it ;)

you drive it slowly so the piston rings will bed in properly. if you dont, it could lead to oil leaks in the motor, and other complications. wearing the motor in slowly also gets the fuel efficiency at the right values.

think of it this way, you wouldnt punch a chunk of meat after its been in the freezer, just like you wouldnt thrash a new car when its just gotten off the shelf. you have to slowly thaw it.

No, to bed the rings in, you have to provide sufficient cylinder pressure. Driving like a granny is not sufficient to seal the rings optimally. On the other hand, providing sufficient cylinder pressure on a cold engine with cold engine oil is probably the fastest way to cause the rings to lose the seal.

Your analogy is more relevant to driving gently until the engine is warm, not about running in the engine.

reverse was true on my car. previous owner had the motor re-ringed, and stuffed them again by providing 'sufficient cylinder pressure'. using 40-80% of the motor's true capabilities seems about right tho.

A lot's been said about running in the engine, which is fair enough but besides the engine, other parts of the car needs running in too i.e. brakes, drivetrain etc.

I would take things easy for at least the first thousand (or two) km's.

I used the mototune method. Someone else with an Euro in my apartment drove her car gently, but never let the engine warm up before driving off. Her car spits out oil vapour out of the exhaust (sickly sweet smell)

heng man, isnt this like almost common sense ? why would you go fang the car straight out when you dun even know how the car behaves etc. you should just drive it normally, not granny not hard just like normal driving for a bit till you get used to it n all, and then give it a punch once in awhile. Technical side of things, there shouldnt be a big problem of you fanging it straight out in good car conditions (as in warmed up car from driving around normally etc) but to be on safe side i think you would wanna just drive it normal for a bit NOT granny dun get me wrong lolz.

and like posted before, the warm car thing, u dont need to warm the car up idling till warm, just drive it off after 30secs-1min and then once car is warm and at operating temperature is when you can fang it, just to be on safe side dun fang it as soon as the needle just hits the operating temperature (almost halfway), i mean, its not hard waitin another few mins of driving is it ? =p
