View Full Version : Advice on Civic buying

I've been looking at buying a Civic hatchback for a while now. One's come up thats within my price range and I thought I'd ask for some advice from the experts. I'm fairly knowledgeable on my cars, technology and mechanical stuff but most my knowledge is with Nissans and I know very little about Honda's. I've done a few searches but some of the info confused me so please forgive me if I am posting things which a search could answer, I'm just trying to get all my answers in one place.

The Civic I am looking at is a 96 CXi hatch. Its engine has done a fair bit (235,000) which is somewhat concerning but I have heard the Civic engines can last well into 300k. Bodywork is all fine but this will most likely end up being my project car (as I've learned that, sadly, no matter how much I do it up my Pulsar n13 will always be a Pulsar n13) There are certain things I would like to do longterm.

It will probably need a rebuild first, but what sort of performance enhancement can I get out of the cxi? I've read some of the turbo/supercharger threads but would like to know what can specifically be done with this car. I'm not after a major amount of boost (probably 6psi) but enough to give it a bit of a surprising kick (and that either does not need an intercooler or a relatively inexpensive one). Essentially I'm after something that will provide a reasonable increase without going crazy, require less extra parts and installation work and wont push my insurance and maintenance bills through the roof and wont wear out my engine in less then a year :p. A nice karma balance of all.

I'm leaning more towards a s/c since it has the lower level torque but are either possible on the cxi and how much, also are there specific kits that are available or that will work (and what comes in the kit, just the charger, or all the bits needed). Is there any work that needs to be done to the engine or could the Honda engines take a charger relatively 'easy' (easier then a pulsar, which requires mucho modification or a new engine)
What other work can be done to enhance performance for a reasonable budget (Aside from an electric supercharger, I actually want a performance INCREASE :p)

I did a lot of work on the interior of my last car, how easy do the trims come off the civic? I'd be looking at either dying the current vinyl/cloth or putting my own on. Are they relatively straightforward to re-upholster (The ruddy pulsar had the cloth STAPLED and glued on, making it impossible to replace easily).
Is there ways of getting extra wiring through for a subwoofer to the back? What sized speaker mounts are in the front trims and how easy is it to put a new stereo unit and speakers in? And for that matter, wiring up a central locking kit and alarm.
Does the cxi have power steering? I have heard some models don't. Any common faults/problems with that series?
What stud pattern do the wheels use for getting new rims? Whats the best size rims to put on/biggest legal size with and without modification.

Again, sorry if these are common questions, but I'm still a bit confused on Honda stuff and would really appreciate any help on this, as it will make a huge difference on whether I will get the car or not. Thanks all, and hopefully will be spending more time on the Honda forums.

Oh yeah, should I be REALLY worried that its a dealer car, and its only $4,750? It seems just a little too cheap, considering the next cheapest is $6,000 for another +200k car...

A CXI for that price is pretty good. i wouldn't recon the engine, I'd buy a D series motor to put in it, you can usually get one for about $800 with only about 80k kms on it. If you turbo it you can get pretty good power, prob as quick or quicker than most v8s depending on your turbo design/specs

i agree with limbo.
if you think your engine is gonna go soon, **** the car up before you start your project.
just for fun
so u dont **** it up wen it becomes a car you treasure.
4 750 is cheap for a cxi.
but it is a bit .. err..
check everything there is to check. especially perfomance wise.
get someone that can tell if a car has been in an accident before.
you dont wanna be drivin a civic hatch with an unstable chassis.

i could answer some of you questions.
sound system wise, the civic is probably the easiest and good for beginner installers.
i installed a full head-to-toe sound system in my EG with no experience, and it looked and sounded sweet.
although considering i have a mechanical background it was easier for me.

cxi does have power sterring.
well all the ones ive worked on does.

with rims, rta (sydney) allows +2inch.
for my EG i could get 16"
buit im gettin 17" lol makin up sum bullshit it came 15" as a default.

i think EK civics have a 5x100 or 5xsomething stud pattern.

when it comes to hondas..it gets intresting once you get to know how vtec works.
you get so into it.
and as you probably could tell, the people in OH is very enthusiatic with advise or saying theyre point of view.
hondas are cars taht keep quality, performance and value.

you cant go wrong with hondas.

but goodluck with your civic. all the best.
keep us updated with some pickies n other mods that you do with it. :D

Thanks for that. I haven't actually bought it yet, I'm going in to give it a full check tomorrow. Lol, I've thrashed my current car enough to have all the thrashing and running into the ground out of my system :p. I agree the price seems a little too cheap but if any problems it has are repairable then I might take the risk.

Taken it for a test drive, only mechanical issues seem to be the SRS light is on meaning that the system either needs to be reset or replaced. I almost would prefer the car didn't have an airbag as I have a sports steering wheel I wanted to put on :p

Also the handbrake light stays on so I'm guessing from doing a search that I need to top up the brake fluid or something, no dramas.

Can people stop saying this because this is WRONG. Thats is NOT what the RTA says.

The outside diameter of the wheel and tyre combination must be no more than 15mm over the largest diameter
wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle and not more than 15mm below the smallest diameter wheel
and tyre combination specified for the vehicle.U can put 20's on ur car as long au u get a thin enough profile tire that ur r rolling diamater isnt changed by more than 15mm (although i dont think this is possible with 20s)

Wether or not u get defected or not is up to the officers discretion. Wether or not you'll pass your blue slip depends on the above stated rule.

Also you cant lie to a cop about what size tyre came with ur car. There's a sticker on ur door, and ull get in just as much trouble if u take it off.

Read here for more info on wheel sizes
