Considering 02+ cos apparently that they had fixed the gearbox problem and rear glass reflecter instead of plastic. But are the 99-01 S2K still worth to look? Or I will just end up spending extra money which could afford a 02 model instead?

you'd still get the desired satisfaction out of an AP1 i think.

All I am worrying is the "After-purchase" maintenance :(

nothing wrong with the 99-01 models except the infamous clutch buzz and rear plastic window..
3k you got yourself a glass window and a new clutch

spoondc2
25-08-2007, 10:35 AM
So simply, price of a 99-01 model + around 3k on top?
Any other things i need to aware of?

chicken8
25-08-2007, 10:45 AM
02 came with facelift external bits and pieces. chrome headlights. chrome rings around tail lights. upgrade in stereo. theres also a complete red interior for the 02 and 03 models. gear knob was changed. you have a clock on your stock stereo which wasnt available on the 99/00s

polished wheels as opposed to the 99-01s

and generally just a newer car

if your budget does allow you to get an 02 then i don't see why you shouldn't. i would prefer an s2000 that came stock with the rear window etc than a 99 that had a roof replacement. but thats just me

also in the 02 the headlight washer switch was moved to a location that u wont hit with your hand all the time

spoondc2
25-08-2007, 12:36 PM
Yeah i am looking for 02 model but seems like they are not available on the market. :(

And how much am i looking for a 99 to 02 model?

chicken8
25-08-2007, 06:31 PM
a 99/00 with 80km or so on it can be had for 30k to 32k

02s you'll be looking at more than 40k

so there is around a $10k difference

a few months ago someone bought a 2000 model black/red with 27km on it for $44k tho

so prices do vary depending on what kms u want etc

chicken8
25-08-2007, 06:32 PM
i sold my 02 a month ago to a friend of a friend for what i think is a pretty good price.

i'm sure you'll find one. just depends on how long you have to wait

Spunkymonkey
25-08-2007, 09:09 PM
yes, there isn't many 02's out there....

also be wary there's a few "repaired" writeoffs floating on carsales now...a few in sydney and one in canberra....

and also the scams pop up every now and then for cars under 10K

just keep looking for the right one...it will turn up eventually...but best to be patient

spoondc2
26-08-2007, 12:54 AM
Yeah can feel there are scams around the market

I wouldn't mind to have a 99 or 00 model, just gotta make sure i won't need to pay my nuts to fix anything then that's enough

eriktufa
26-08-2007, 01:57 AM
Good luck with the hunting.

40k is the lowest price you have to pay for 02 onwards model.

99/00 model can be bought low as 30k but if you are lucky, you can buy 01 one for low 30s :D

Hi Spoon

New Member here Geordie, I have a 2000model S2000 and have driven the 2002 model not much difference apart from the 02 has a better clutch and smoother gearbox and all the things Chicken reported were very acurate, gearbox can be a tad irritating sometimes, Ive had my car 2 years now never spent a cent on it, simply service every 10kms and Hey Presto that's about it, Oh yeah and check your oil levels every 2 weeks they tend to burn a bit of oil. I paid $32 for mine 2 years ago had 50.000 on the clock, came with beautifull 17 inch alloy wheels,

yes. obviously

i wouldn't buy an ex demo

because its pretty certain that the period of wearing in the engine has been thrashed

yayya.. actually more worry about people revving it up before the oil gets warmed up.
cos on the euro, u need to drive around 10min before the oil temp gets 80+ and people test cars don't usually wait 10min then drive fast LOL

spoondc2
31-08-2007, 11:33 PM
That's why dealers don't allow ppl to rev the car during test drive or before warmed up. But still, i wouldn't think ex-demo car will have much durabilities

Personally I would go for an 02+ model. The resale value on 02+ is much much better than any 99-01 model. There are tonnes of 99-01's for sale but only a few 02+'s.

If you cant afford an 02+, then go for a 00 or 01.
For an 00/01 get one that has done really low km's, log book with full service history from honda and not some dodgy car mechanic, paint and leather in good condition and make sure the owner KNOWS his car.
Ex ask them:
- when the last service was done and how much it cost.
- did they do a wheel alignment (just for curiosity).
- how often they change the oil.
- what kind of km's its done.
- do they use any products on the car.
- and all the other normal questions (accidents, scratches, service, gearbox etc...)

Make sure when you talk to the seller they know about their car and if your getting answers like "im not sure", "i dont know" then forget it, find a different car.

I would never buy a s2000 that has engine mods and reluctant to buy one that is lowered or with 18"+ rims or non honda serviced. Stock is best. If you want to make mods to it after then at least you know some idiot has not been messing around with the engine.

Bringing this thread back!

I'm looking for an S2000 and i just wanna know, whats the difference between a AP1 adn AP2. What year does a AP2 start producing?

I have read through this whole thread already... Thanks.

02-11-2007, 06:09 PM
Differences between AP1 and AP2

AP2:
Updated front and rear tail lights
Better suspension
Seats are different
wheels
steering wheel
center console
front and rear bumpers

there are only small differences between AP1 and AP2 if you think about it. The americans get the 2.2L motor for their AP2's, but it has a lower redline.

intake would probably just leave in the car, too much of a bastard to replace with the standard box

lol, you're more than welcome to make me an offer on the car with both sets of wheels and air filter!!

nice tips guys...juz hav some query about the F20C. Been to one of the ITR track day in VIC, on the day I've seen 2 s2k(not sure wad year, but looks juz a stock s2k without n e mods) been towed away due to engine failure. So is it the problem more wif the driver or the engine? Coz am thking of getting a 00/01 model s2k soon. So wanna hear wad u guys know about.
Thanks

WhiteAP1
08-11-2007, 02:42 AM
Main problem seems to be a loose nut between the driver's seat and the steering wheel. :p

Engines fine. I guess some ppl see the track, get excited and just push it way past its limits. High RPM mis-shifts or early down shifts probably the most common cause of engine failure (in my experience)

Every engine has its breaking point, and the F20C is not any more sensitive than the next. Ive seen a few B series throw a rod or two in my day, doesnt mean all B series will.

So what happens with repairable write-offs? They can still be sold, insured and registered on the road even if they are considered write-offs??

And if i buy an S2K from another state as i am in VIC, considering i get find out after that the car is a repairable write-off ... am i still able to get it insured and registered in VIC??

Sry for all the questions ... i just feel that since i am making a trip up to sydney to have a look at a few cars i should know all the problems that i may encounter with dodgy sellers of dodgy cars. Thx...

I've heard that if u buy a repairable write-off car in Vic (juz bcoz I live here), VicRoad will keep an record on their database, so the insurance company would also b informed. therefore, u might not be able to insure the car under maybe RACV or AMMI...plus u always have 2 pay more for it. Anywayz, i guess justcar would insure anyone wif money, and yes of course VicRoad would let u register it since they are getting pay form you ea year.

dream on guys, I already asked for the seats in the intro thread :p

But seriously though, better not parting it. Not enough ppl want to mod their S2000's, thus being left with parts you cant sell, and have the requirement of stock parts to replace the modded ones etc, just not worth the hassle.

but if you DO want a black interior.... I'm your man :D
