American consumers are increasingly turning to Honda’s Civic and Accord as high fuel prices begin to bite.

Figures released by American consumer leasing website LeaseCompare.com show that while American icons such as the Chevy Corvette remain popular, fuel efficient models from Honda are gaining ground.

In the list of most quoted models for the first half of 2007 -- based on more than two million quotes -- the Honda Accord and Civic are ranked 6th and 7th respectively, with the Chevrolet Corvette head of the list. The Honda CR-V sits in ninth place.

Tarry Shebesta, President of Automobile Consumer Services, the company behind LeaseCompare.com, said "The Honda Accord and Civic show up on both lists primarily due to the continued high price of gasoline."

American Honda’s own sales figures point to a similar story. Sales of the Honda Civic reached 201,652 for July year-to-date, up 4.12 per cent over the same period in 2006.

Honda’s compact SUV, the CR-V, is up a whopping 41.98 per cent year to date, reaching 124,262 vehicles.

"Small SUVs and small cars have shown the strongest sales growth in 2007," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda. "The CR-V and Fit are two of Honda's - and the industry's - fastest selling vehicles."
