Is there a rule of thumb for how far off can you go to the stock offset? For example offset of 50 can it be changed to 45, 40 etc etc?

i don't believe theres any rule of thumb. It depends on how far you can go before it starts to scrap your standard guards and if you want serious dish, how far your willing to go to get the wheels to fit under there.

How are you planning on "changing the offset"? Machining the wheel? If you are talking about new wheels, then no - there isnt a rule of thumb. There are limits though as if you go to far in any direction you tend to hit something (fender/inner wheel wells etc).

Not changing the offset per such, i meant changing offset by changing rims.

If its still within the limits, not hitting anything... will the handling be effected?

how about the tire wear? I dont think it will be an issue unless you camber it a lot, then the tire will wear out faster.

if wider track, then its more stress on the lugs

my rule of thumb is test fit it and see how it fits/drives

Is there an actual limit without the guess work?

depends on car and how low it is. best thing to do imo is to test fit

in plain english THERE IS NO GENERIC RULE OF THUMB
