you should just go to the shop and have a listen coz maybe $600 speaker and $200 speaker you cant tell the difference, so you should just trust your ear rather than ask ppl, for my own I will choose Boston than Rockford, then again I wont use it in my own car either one of those ........

Why not use $600 Boston's? Possibly because he doesn't like the sound they produce?

When I was hunting around for speakers I listened to a crapload... ranging in price from about 350 up to 1200. Here's my quicklist of models i've listened to and a brief description.

Alpine: only listened to the Type-R's (previous range) and they were good but they didn't stand out. Tweeter was nice and smooth, mid-bass was nice as well.

Boston Acoustic: Pro-series was a bit too bright for my liking. The tweeters are very "in your face". Z6..... drool..... One of the best sets of speakers i've heard.

JL Audio: TR and VR range are quite good as well, mid-bass presence could be a little better but the tweeters are nice and smooth. ZR series.... same as the Boston Z6's, the tweeters on the ZR's are a little brighter than the Bostons but god dam it's got bass.

Pioneer: The top of the rtange pioneer's were nice, mid-bass was quite good. I just thought hey were a bit expensive for the sound they produced.

Focal: 165V1 and 165V2, nice and detailed if not on the bright side.

Morel: Elate's were fantastic, which is why I forked out nearly $700 on a set. Tweeters are smooth yet still detailed, although the mid-bass doesn't have the same presence as some other speakers it's got enough of it to please the ears. The Supremo's were even more amazing, couldn't fault them in anyway. Abosolutely loved them but I just don't have deep enough pockets... lol

MB Quart: Nice and detailed, can be quite bright when the volume is turned up though. Once you go higher up in the range to the Premium and Q-line the brightness does go away but then the price tag also increases. I've got a set of the previous range of Reference series, very nice sounding speaker.

Rockford Fosgate: Didn't find a pair that I liked, personally I found them to be very bright so that just put me off them completely.

Cadence: Wasn't really interested in cadence speakers but I thought I might as well listen to them to see what they're like. Nothing special, very dull and bland sound.

Audiobahn: as above if not worse

Soundstream: Nice speakers but just didn't stand out like some of the others.

Dynaudio: smooth sound... smooth as silk. The cheapest of the range starts from about $900 (i think)

There are a tonne of other brands out there that you should try and have a listen to so that you don't sell yourself short when getting speakers. Some would include DD (Digital Designs), Rainbow, Diamond Audio, OZ Audio, Infinity , DLS as well as Hertz.

Places in syd that i'd check out would be FHRX Studios or Precision Engineering. I've made quite a few trips to FHRX and have spent a fair bit of $$, but at least i knew that each $ was spent with confidence.

Note: Those descriptions are based on what I thought about them based on my personal preference. I know of people who don't like the sound of the Morel's and like Rockford's more purely because they like the "in your face" kinda sound. So it really comes down to what YOU like, no point in spending $700 on a set of speakers of other people say it's good but they don't stand out to you.

soundstream subs 2000watt 15" is 380 includin postage.
and a mono amp costs 600 includin postage.

bt thats just rough figures of ebay prices.
and trust me .. that wattage .. is not evrythin.
im runnin 2 12" being fed by 250watt rms and it pumps at low level settings.

Your ears are the best Judge.

Go to a shop that has a good range and take your own music along and hava listen. Using your own music helps you identify how accuratley the speaker is performing against your expectations of music you know well.

Remeber though that the soundboard is good for a listen but the sound will be different once in your car too (generally better if set up and tuned correctly).

I have a euro running Focal's 165v2 and they perform well with good detail for SQ.

I personally was tossing up between Rockfords, MBQ and Bostons (in the <$350 price range) and these are my thoughts;

Bostons- good but didn't sound bright enough for me
Rockfords- the dual tweeters made it way too shrill for my music and I'd have to turn the volume down to make it bearable
MBQ- best balance and offered the right 'feel'

Of course it depends on your music and tastes, but I just found that it was really a tossup between the RF and MBQ. I'm not quite sure exactly why I disregarded the cheap Bostons straight away- just didn't suit me.

I would get Boston, Focal, Audison, or JL Audio. Most of the Japanese stuff is no good, i.e. Sony and the cheaper Pioneer stuff you find at Strathfield Car Radios. The American and European brands are usually better sounding. Avoid eBay because they sell a lot of fake speakers.

FHRX Studios sell good stuff. If ur in Sydney, there's a good car audio place in Parramatta - on Church street I think.

Haha my logic ultimately was;

Rockfords would give me the ****s if I turned them up loud because the treble would just be so shrill and painful... considering I listen to alot of Chinese music which typically already has strong/balanced vocals, I didn't want to exxagerate the vocals even further.

Hence the MBQ seemed more suitable since I could turn them up without driving me nuts. Since then, I haven't regretted my decision.

The only thing which was really in the Rockfords favour would be the fact you could mount the tweeters seperately and improve the sound stage- but then in my Civic, I'd either be forced to mount it in the coaxial+tweeter style, or the two tweeters together anyway (i.e. pretty much same effect as what I've got now where the MBQ's single tweeter is slotted in the tweeter hole on the dash) because there's nowhere else to put the tweeter in such a way to keep the car looking stock.
