Hi all,
Just a query, my wife's 06 VTi civic's paint seems to be really 'fragile'. There are a couple scratches on it that reveal the primer underneath, but when you look at the scratch itself, the topcoat thickness is 'barely' there. I'm not having a huge gripe, but it seems fairly easy to leave a mark in the duco on my civic at least. The scratches I think were caused when loading the car and possibly the nappy bag for our kid rubbed up against it.
Any other people experienced anything similiar?

I haven't received my new civic yet, but I have read alot of complaints about people regarding the cheapness of the civic paints. And its not just the australian (thailand build) civics... UK and US markets as well!
So yes, they seem to scratch easily down to the primer apparently. :(

Hmmm, I know the paint on the CTR is pretty poor, but the paint on my '06 VTi-L seems pretty durable - but I've got hardly any chips - surprising given the 30000+ klicks I've rack up in the beast.
Touch-up paint is your friend though...

Can/do you get touchup paint from the dealer? I can think of two instances of ppl i know where a new car came with touchup paint.. but is this the norm with new cars?
Just bought my 2nd ever Honda and did not receive touch up paint with either of them. I have bought 4 new cars from 2 other major Japanese car manufacturers and received a can of touch up paint with each of them.
Go figure.

generally no you dont get touch up can but some manufactures do. Also soem dealerships do aswell.
The best option for scratches if your buying a new car is ask if they have 5th dimension. You get a scratch and dent warranty on the vehicle for 2yrs. but u do pay for it. Costs about 3k rrp.

well... my bumper has several scratches, one from my mate who took his suitcase out and the wheel rolled over my bumper, so there is a pretty deep scratch and the second was my gf accidently reversed slowly into a wall in a carpark, made minor chips on the bumper.. but it is quite thin, I don't think a deep scratch would have been caused by the suitcase in a more expensive car

haha go find out. Go to a bmw and run the wheel over. That will tell ya. It depends on the colour of the car to. Its a known fact that colours other than white will show up scratches far worse than white. But price ya pay to have ur car not looking like a commercial vehicle.

I did get a small jar of touch up paint from the deailer, but had to pay for it when I picked up the car on the second service.

the paint on most vehicles these days isn't really what it used to be, but if you have done something to completely take the paint of it must have copped a fair whack/scrape.
touch up paint for most honda colours is $15-18

well... I know my dad backed his E60 into a wall before, wanted to challenge the Parking Sesor, thought there was still space when there wasn't... his bumper didn't even feel like it got hit, felt the same... but I wasn't sure exactly how fast my gf backed my civic into the wall, so I can't really compare.

Yeah, I had to buy the paint from the dealership for $15 for the Bluish Silver. A small price to pay to stop the rust creeping in, especially seeing I live and work on the coast...
Mind you, the first time I needed was a for a decent chip caused by a chunk of metal falling off the back of a truck and striking just above the right wheel arch (counting my blessing's it wasn't the windscreen) - took all the paint off down to the bare metal. I've found that the touch-up paint is too thick to use on basic scuffs, where the undercoat is still intact.

I have some chipped paint from removing my door scuff but didnt bother to get touch up paint. So i just stuck the new scuff ontop. Should i have touched it up to prevent rusting? Since its inside the door and i dont live near the beach, it should be ok right?
At $15 , it is pretty cheap not to include a can of touch up paint with the car.

I totally agree.
I suppose if they supplied you with touch up paint as standard that may get some people thinking "they don't give this with the car for no reason... you'll need it!".i.e the quality of the paint is rubbish!
I wanted to say I foudn the Civic 06's paint to be pretty darn strong. I admit I scraped my car against a pole in Westfield Parra parking lot and it left alot of marks on my car... but with a cloth and some water, I managed to get all the marks off- turns out it had scraped the paint off the pole and not my car!
