How much torque to apply?

I've been fiddling around with an engine in my backyard for a while and have been putting it back together. Can anyone tell me how much to torque them down? It's a H22A1 if that helps. I searched around but all the torque figures are insane...40ft lb to be exact for 12mm bolts. I tried it first on my busted D13 and the bolt snapped just like that. Btw, this is for the internals.

not all same sized bolts have the same torque figures. d/l the helms guide for more info.
